I was here last friday lunchtime/afternoon, so can't speak for the evenings.
Pretty good Weatherspoons. Food was fine but not outstanding. Clientelle seemed OK.
Knowing Cannock though, I bet it's 'orrible at night!

There are good and bad points about Hops.
The Good - excellent range of drinks, resonable prices, good location, nice beer garden out the front.
The Bad - The regulars seem to think they own the bar and crowd the small area making it diffiicult to get a drink (I know this isn't unique to this pub but this one has a particularly small bar area which means it's more irksome than usual). If you're going in the afternoon/early evening make sure you like kids as someone will inevitably have their baby with them. The landlady can be snotty, but the rest of the staff are nice.
On balance, it's a decent enough place and worth a visit.

The Duke of Bridgewater, Crewe
The review below is spot on. The Duke may well be my favourite pub in Crewe. The beer is always good quality and a great price. Friendly staff and regulars (a rarity in Crewe, I'm sad to say).

All boarded up and "all items of value have been removed."
Used to be a nice little pub when Bruce was in charge. He tried and really made an effort. Unfortunately, he left and the place went steadily downhill over the past six months. I think the final straw was when a load of yobs smashed up the gents one Saturday night.

Be careful not to sit in the wrong seat as the yokels don't like you sitting in "their" place. Expensive too, even for Nantwich.

Looks great from the outside but that's about it.
I was served a near undrinkable pint of Staropramen by a rather surly barman. I sat down in the rather unimpressive surroundings to hear a bunch of sad bores on the next table boasting loudly of their (imaginary?) sexual exploits. I drank up as quick as I could without vomiting and left.
Next time I'm passing, I'll keep passing.

A proper pub with a top landlord. Would definitely visit there again next time I'm in Shrewsbury.

The Hole In The Wall, Shrewsbury
The beer and food here were OK, especially for the price. The staff were quite polite - could have been a bit more attentive, but I've had worse.
It's alright, but nothing special.

The Limelight Live Music Club, Crewe
All the reviews below represent the Limelight of old. Unfortunately, it is now under new management which is displaying what can only be called a negative midas touch.
Membership and ticket prices have soared (7.50 for one year membership, up from 5), the variety of bands has shrunk (it's mostly lumpen 70's style hard rock/hair metal these days), and don't bother asking the DJ for a request as he's under orders to play what the owner wants to hear or what the owner has told him to play.
So many of the things that made the Limelight great have gone or are disappearing. I doubt I'll be going back in a hurry.

Went in here for the first time a few weeks ago to watch the England v. Scotland rugby match. Pretty good atmosphere with more tellies than Dixons. Took me a while to get served at first but service was very quick after my first drink. Didn't try the food, but it looked nice.
There's an area out the back for smokers. Pretty small, but it was nice and warm.
I would certainly come back here again. A much better Bar Sport than the one in Cannock.

One of the crappier Weatherspoon's pubs. Food is pretty naff and the clientelle are pretty much what you'd expect to find in a cheapo Crewe boozer - chavs, grizzled pensioners, dullards with horrible snot-nosed kids running round, etc.

Have to agree with other posters about the quality of staff. Apart from one or two, they're more interested in chatting to their mates and posing than serving customers. This has been going on for years and it's sad to see that nothing much has changed.
Mind you, even if the staff were more attentive, this place isn't really worth a visit. It's just another soulless, crappy little student bar.

Pretty good pub, although I did prefer it before the re-fit a few years ago. Very good smoking area out the back.

Combermere Arms, Wolverhampton
Great little pub with a corking beer garden and character in spades.

Always pop in here when I'm in Nantwich. Food is very good and served with a smile. Nice decor and friendly locals make it a pleasure to visit.

Best pub in Richmond. I used to drink here when I was a student 1995 - 1998. Went back for a return visit last year and it was still great.

Decent little town centre pub. Definitely worth a pint or two if you're on a crawl.

Crap in just about every way - expensive, no atmosphere, arrogant/rude staff, rubbish beer, etc.
One (very brief) visit was more than enough for me.

I've never actually been in here. Probably because it always stinks of stale beer and shit when I walk past.
15 Jan 2008 10:55
Nice beer garden, which is useful if you're a smoker (like me!) but the actual pub itself has absolutely no atmosphere at all.

The Duke of Bridgewater, Crewe
This used to be a nice little pub. Unfortunately, it has recently been turned into a Polish Bar & Resteraunt, so don't bother going in if your first language is English.

The Davy Lamp, Great Wyrley
Is this place still open? I remember it being an absolute shithole for years.
