Popped in for a swift half earlier this week, not having been in here for about 7 years (I pass by daily), and was pleasantly surprised. They had a good selection of ales (including local ones - I had the Severn Vale Dursley Steam Bitter, which was on form, and Bass as I recall and another 4, plus a 'proper' cider) and staff were friendly. They also were hosting an art exhibition, which I didn't look at (made my way outside for the sunshine in their nice, flowered beer garden out the front), and may therefore give me cause to go back. With a pub that makes "being well run" look so effortless, I cannot understand how a pub can be badly run. Really nice homecooked food, really good beer (and a decent choice), and the landlord is very knowledgeable. Decent garden for sunny days too! Landlady is friendly and welcoming, and the locals at the bar don't seem to object to strangers. Judging by the cricket team, fishing club, etc its popular with the locals as well, so hopefully will be around for a long time. Have been in several times, (quite happily drive from Bristol to Thornbury to eat here), and will be back again soon. pubscouter - 19 May 2013 21:11 |
Small town pub in Thornbury that appears to stock a good range of real ales judging by the number of clips on the ceiling and also by the selection on during our visit - Youngs London Porter, Great Western Maiden Voyage, Greene King London Glory, Marstons Pedigree & Bass. Cider was Ashton Still. We didn't find the welcome particularly friendly. Having worked in pubs myself, I always appreciated having glasses brought back to the bar and I generally do this, unless I've received bad service. However from a customers point of view, a polite 'thanks' from the bar staff is also appreciated. I didn't receive that here. blue_scrumpy - 7 Mar 2012 17:25 |
Now in the 2010 CAMRA guide, and deservedly so. Have recently had a few meals there, and they are wholesome and good value. Hard to fault this pub now. Roodeye - 10 Oct 2010 19:18 |
Can't add much more than Roodeye's review really, 10p CAMRA reduction is a nice touch. Locals seem to be pretty friendly as do staff & landlord and beer tried was in good condition. It's great when pubs like this turnaround and easily the best pub in Thornbury by a mile and then some, actually the pub is located in Morton if being pedantic. Nice garden at rear too if we ever get a summer, well worth a try! MisterX - 11 May 2010 05:20 |
