"Bar" has indeed supplanted pub. Quite a bit of money appers to have been spent on updating from its previous incarnation as the Crowders Well. That fact and its expensive location probably go to explain the necessary emphasis on food. The IPA wasn't bad and at 2.85 or thereabouts not overly expensive for the location but to my mind this place is stylistically too sterile to have the potential ever to develop the easygoing, well lived in feel necessary for it to become one's 'local'. And in fairness, that is due in part to the limitations imposed by its close proximity to Barbican Estate flats (concerns over noise etc etc). _grobag_ - 1 Jan 2010 14:22 |
It is now The Wood Street Bar & Restaurant. I had a very nice pint of Greene King IPA, I will return when I am in the area. Greenie - 22 Nov 2009 14:00 |

I used to work very near here and despite the pub's location at the bottom of one of the ghastly concrete behemoths in the Barbican it's actually not a bad place although not that big so it can get crowded. As for views of the water don't expect panoramic views of Lake Victoria - it's just one of those large artificial Barbican ponds against a backdrop of yet more concrete. Worth a visit if you are in the area particularly if the alternative is one of the crapholes on the podium level murgatroyd - 2 Feb 2007 09:45 |
Interesting location beneath the behemoth that is the Barbican. Access is off London Wall at Alban Gate. Some good views of the water but I haven't been since 99/2000 so dunno what the beer is like. danrkelly - 10 May 2005 11:11 |
