On our recent visit to Wigan we nipped into Doc's Symposium, busy again but the age range of the customers ranged from 20s to 60s. Had a pint of Bowland 'Hen Harrier' decent enough pint.

Got to agree with blue scrumpy , it does look like a cafe, but staff were friendly, there is seating out the front for smokers. Quite busy on the Sunday we visited but we got a table ok, the clientele were all over 50. There was 5 ales on, I had Prospect 'Silver Tally', a pleasant session ale.

Also found a micro pub near the bus station called the Tap 'n' Barrel, which is not listed on this website. It is, I think, the brewery tap for the Martland Mill Brewery. Pleasant & friendly bar staff, tables at front for smokers. 5 ales on, i indulged in Clogmaker [nice pint], D-Day Dodger [very nice] 7 Arctic Convoy [stout like ale, smooth & very tasty]. Would recommend this establishment.

With an hour to spare in Wigan whilst changing trains, I made the 10 minute walk to Doc's Symposium. Described as a micropub, it felt more like a continental café. It comes complete with a delicatessen counter. Ales were Weetwood Cheshire Cat & Eastgate, York Guzzler, Black Edge Hop & Prospect Silver Tally. It was busy late on a Saturday evening. There were more tables than your average micropub. But all were taken. So standing or sitting outside were the only options. Not as good as I was hoping. So I drank up swiftly and moved on.
