We'll worth a drive up the hill even if you have to wait for the cows to clear the road, very friendly great location, we'll kept ales and good home cooked food, easily my favourite on the southern corner of the island where we were staying vinnnie - 18 Nov 2014 10:50 |
A HIDDEN GEM IN ON THE ISLAND....... Today was the whole reason we decided to come to the isle of wight for a holiday the great people and the great views .... Today was the last day of our holiday. me and my partner decided to take a walk up the culver cliffs hill, we didnt expect it to be so far but it was most definatley worth the walk, we walked all around the top of the cliffs the views were breathtaking on the way back down we stopped in the Culver Haven Inn for a bit of lunch the owners had only just moved in and today was there first day. the food was fantastic and the presentation was great, the new owners Dan and Debbie made us feel at home and very welcome they took the time to make sure we had everything we needed after lunch we decided to stay for a few drinks and before we knew it 4 hours had past, its a shame we found this place on the last day of our holiday but we are really glad we did, we are already planning to come back in the summer a big thanks to Dan and Debbie and all the staff at the culver haven inn we hope to see you all soon ...... Bit of a disappointment. Great location but lacks atmosphere and that warm pub feeling. Service unimpressive when I visited. Missed opportunity. potrix - 28 Dec 2011 22:59 |
The location is great. Staying at a nearby campsite, our first evening negotiating a route to the Culver Haven Inn was a bit of a challenge. When we eventually arrived (after steering ourselves through a field of cows and that's not easy in the dark) we were rewarded with a pub that serves up several ales. I stuck to the local Island brew 'Vectis Venom' - when on the Island, drink the Island ale!! The service was friendly. As already mentioned, the building is modernish. Initially, I thought we had taken a wrong turn and arrived at someones house. But the interior is spacious. Turned up too late to sample the food and come to think of it the views!! The second night we visited, the Downs were shrouded in fog from the sea, the nearby monument looming eerily. This gave the place a certain Hammer Horror atmosphere. (If only I were wearing a tweed Van Helsing type cloak and cap). I am determined to return during the day sometime soon to take in the view and better still another pint of Vectis Venom. A welcome sight after a walk up the hill - the beers were well kept and the food very nice. The guys running it seem pleasant and friendly and the views from the small beer garden out back have spectacular views around the island. Just ignore the 'prison camp fencing' surrounding you. Necessary I'm sure, but if it was replaced more sympathetically it would only enhance the experience. chick - 25 Jul 2011 10:58 |
