As Hugh1971 says, a Hidden Gem! We have been going to the Eight Bells for some years - whenever we are passing that way - if only we could pick it up and move it closer! Everything you want in a true traditional pub, friendly locals, friendly staff and excellent beer. thefirkintaster - 24 Jul 2015 11:04 |
Just when you're about to give up on British pubs, you find a hidden gem like this one which restores your faith. This is how I remember pubs used to be. A proper ale house instead of a Farrow and Ball painted restaurant pretending to be a pub. A nice old traditional building with a rough and ready but clean feel to it, a pretty beer garden with an Aunt Sally stand, good range of real ales well kept and served, friendly service and a 'local' feel. Definitely recommended, perfect for a visit if you're cycling out from Oxford. Hugh1971 - 28 Sep 2014 11:43 |
Called in again here yesterday early evening, handy from the campsite across the road. Abingdon Bridge and Special were very good. The whole pub had been taken over by a group of cyclists, who were on a pub crawl, all with tee-shirts proclaiming "Weir for Cumnor Mayor 2014 Campaign". Great atmosphere sat outside in the beer garden at the front. Wirral_RealAlians - 8 Jun 2014 11:20 |
Great pint of Red Ale and Bath Ales Gem out of a good selection on Friday night. Hidden Gem this one. Great traditional 2 roomed country pub. Main bar on the right has the bar across the far end with red velvet banqette seating and stools in a cosy bar with small fireplace. The lounge on the left has a lighter feel with the bar in the corner and a large fireplace with wood burning stove. Nice beer garden out the front and as the pub is gearing up for a charity music night on 24/09/12 with live bands, a hog roast and selection of at least 10 ales, there was a marquee set up on the edge of the car park. I'm surprised nobody has ever reviewd or even rated this pub. But then, unless you knew where it was located, you would never find it. Tucked away discretely on a dead end road leading to the River Thames, this pub is a rural gem and is fairly unspoiled by progress. The complimentary prawn crackers, twiglets and Doritos were the only clues as to what century we were in. Soft Irish music was playing, presumably the music of choice for the Irish landlord. But conversation is king here and the landlord plus locals showed keen interest in who we were, where we were from and why we were there (phew that's a lot of w's for one sentence!). Beers on were White Horse Village Idiot & Volund's Hammer, Three Castles Hay Bale, Marstons Pedigree and Loose Cannon Abingdon Bridge. The landlord claimed he'd had a rush on real cider and he'd run out. But this didn't look like a place where a rush would occur. This pub was the best of the day for me, due to the beer range, the warm welcome, its location and also due to its traditional interior. Definitely one to seek out. blue_scrumpy - 26 Oct 2010 21:08 |
