Walked into this pub from the rear entrance, after an argument with the dog in the garden! Timothy Taylor Landlord is the chosen ale here. A guest was Ossett Yorkshire Blonde. We decided to return to the garden, with said dog removed. There is also a rather large rabbit that didn't move much except to eat a slice of cabbage. The interior looked fairly cosy, albeit a bit dark. It was quiet on our Thursday lunchtime visit. Staff were friendly. Moved on from here to the Lysander Arms in Rawcliffe, which is not worth adding to BITE. blue_scrumpy - 31 Aug 2019 12:13 |
Visited the pub for a beer and a meal. The beer was of good quality but the food was of a very poor standard. My wife and I complained and I refused to pay for the meal, which was stew and dumplings. The Stew was like soup, very thin and with streaky pieces of meat, with bland dumplings. My wife's chicken was crusty on the outside and tasteless. The "cooK" came out of the kitchen in a very aggressive manner saying they had no complaints before, and told us to finish our drinks and leave. In the event we didnt pay for the stew but they insisted we had to pay for the chicken. We will never cross this threshold again. regentdave - 25 Mar 2009 09:57 |
In the past food has been good and the atmosphere friendly. Change of ownership in the last three weeks. Standards have dropped dramatically. Beer still of good quality. Food very poor and when this was brought to the attention of the staff they were very aggressive. We were told that they didn't care whether we came back to the pub or not! Good wholesome pub food and good range of beers. Limited wine list but some reasonable wines available by the glass over the bar. Pleasant beer garden. Worth a visit. roger - 7 Sep 2004 16:22 |
My local, so I could be accused of being biased - friendly staff, limited range of beer (Old Speckled Hen, John Smiths plus one guest as well as the usual lagers plus Guinness) but well kept for all that. Definitely worth a visit for the food - fantastic Sunday dinners and a good line in seriously hot chilli. Good sized beer garden, but usually inhabited by the local midge population on summer evenings :-( Like most pubs in York, gets ludicrously packed on race days but a good bet if you fancy a quiet pint.
