Situated in the tiny village of Scales, overlooking the A66 near Keswick, this was visited on a quiet Thursday night. There were a few people eating a meal, however we stuck to the ale, with a choice between a beer from Tirril and our choice of Helvelyn Gold from the nearby Hesket Newmarket brewery. Pub has an open fireplace, a stone flagged floor and was generally pleasant, albeit a tadge quiet on this occasion, and perhaps better when more full. Customers can place coins into the wall at the rear which are later taken and provided to the Keswick Mountain Rescue, a good idea in my book. SouthYorkshireman - 14 Mar 2014 14:46 |
Had a good meal in here last night. Choice of three real ales on; think I had a Skidaw. Good food and good portions. Pork steaks on a pile of black puddig mash very nice, but pepper sauce very peppery! Fortunately peppercorns could be picked out. Seemed very popular - a number of tables reserved and others filled up by 8. shaggyorigin - 7 Oct 2012 21:21 |
Like many others, this was a convenient place to recuperate after a wet walk up Blencathra. Welcome was warm and the ruby red Cameron ale tasted fine. Sadly limited to one by the need to drive away from there. Indeed, this is the main drawback to this pub- it is a fair walk to most places to stay. mafiosi - 1 Sep 2009 20:15 |
This pub is under a new licensee for the better. We called in for a beer after a particularly wet walk through the fells. The hospitality and beer were superb. We were so impressed we came back for dinner the following evening which was superb value for the money, with large portions of good pub grub. We were there for the jazz band who at the time of writing play on Saturday nights. The music was more popular hits than jazz, which is great for my musical taste buds. We all had a such a great time that we had to wrench ourselves out to go back to the campsite. This is a nice pub, with a landlord doing his best to undo all the wrong of the previous tennant. I do hope that they go from strength to strength. CMY - 17 Aug 2009 11:41 |
Called in here after walking over Blencathra. I don't know if this influenced our taste buds but the beer was excellent. We sampled the Nimmo's XXXX by Camerons brewery. Just to be sure we had a second pint... Yep it was still great. Had a bit of crack with some of the locals in this friendly pub. HOBGOBLIN62 - 23 Jun 2009 13:58 |
