| As per blue_scrumpy’s post this is now called the Walmgate Ale House and Bistro. This was the 2nd to last pub visited on Easter Sunday after a day of shopping, drinking and ticking in York with the wife. It’s nicely decorated inside with several separate seating areas both in the front and back, the bar is situated on your right in the middle of the building. 5 ales available with my pint of York Breweries Walmgate Ale @ 4.2% very decent. As well as the ales they have a decent spirits list though perhaps they need more staff on as the queue for drinks was long and slow while the 2 barman asked far too many questions about which type of spirit and mixer was required! They were both very pleasant but didn’t have much clue ... bless em! Upstairs is the dining area, I didn’t see the food but the menu suggests it’s decent. I liked the Walmgate but they need to have more of a focus on the bar area along with the ales as this place will attract the curious ale drinker until they get wind that the service is slow! | After a visit to the new Pavement Vaults on Piccadilly (just requested for it to be added), we moved on to this place which is now called the Walmgate Ale House & Bistro. It still has a bistro-type feel. So I'm not sure if anything has been done to the interior since the previous reviews. It's a fairly dark and narrow interior. There are few tables due to the lack of space. Upright drinking appears to be the norm. I wasn't overly impressed with the ale range - York Walmgate Ale & Guzzler, Great Heck Dave, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin & Rudgate Viking Bitter. I plumped for the keg Great Yorkshire Yorkshire Cider - nothing special. | I had never been in here before so this was a new experience for me. It is definitely geared up for the bistro-type trade but I had no problem getting a beer and standing at the bar (this was Friday evening and I really did expect it to be much busier but perhaps people eat out later?) Anyway, the pub menu advertises "locally sourced food" and beers only from Yorkshire brewers so it cam as a bit of a shock to find Greene King IPA on sale!!! I had a local beer which was fine(I think it was another Roosters beer) No idea what the food was like but my fiends from York tell me its good. mcroyal - 27 Feb 2012 11:38 |
| I always felt that this was a bold venture in an old converted saddlery. Actually a sensitive conversion with as little intervention as possible, so it is a place with loads of character. Not set out as a pub of course, but a very successful bistro type tapas place...opened by the nationally acclaimed Melton's restaurant (though I have to admit I have never ventured into Meltons) However M too has a small bar, at the last count serving draught York brewery strangely cheaper than the brewery bar! There is a small, characterful function/ performance room in the medieval attic too. So all in all a fine place for an early evening "tapas" style snack or a Sunday breakfast with all the trimmings...definitely worth a try if on a flying visit to York...close to most of the recommended pubs too. caliwag - 17 Jul 2010 13:46 |
