Late write up from 29/09/08 visit (looking back through diary). Although the walk from the Harbour into town had developed a thirst, we had to pass this one by, even though there was Adnams on hand pump, we had not brought our sunglasses to counter the megawatt lighting. Well, I must say I have to disagree completely with previous reviewers. A group of friends, my partner and myself spent a long weekend in Southwold recently. On the Saturday the men popped down the King's Head to watch the rugby ( no other pub in the town was showing it - presumably they didn't want to upset the arcadians ). A great atmosphere with great Adnams. One the Sunday, it started to rain so a few of us, with children popped in. And left three hours later. The staff were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. The food was basic but very good and the Adnams was still excellent. And the place has baby changing facilities. Southwold has a place for this sort of pub, where those who want to get away for the conceitedness of the Red Lion and the Nelson can go and enjoy a pint in a good honest boozer. When we were there, the King's Head was about to shut for a minor refurbishment. I hope it was minor - as there's very little that needs changing. nmckenn - 27 Nov 2010 23:49 |
The King's Head used to be such a nice pub, with a warm atmosphere and good natured banter between the local (particularly the local rugger boys) and visitors. But then successive new owners looked at Southwold and spotted a 'gap in the market' - what this town hasn't got is a noisy sports bar with a huge TV screen...let's open one! Turns out, there was no market in the gap, and another once successful pub was lost to chancers hoping to make a fast buck, and missing the point completely chalkywhite - 11 Sep 2010 16:19 |
A dull lifeless dump of a place. Go to The Lord Nelson instead. The best and only decent pub in Southwold. Pat_Bateman - 21 Jun 2010 11:06 |
The King's Head had potential, once apon a time. Now it's been over-run by folk who glare at you for simply walking into the pub. It is not a family pub and does not deserve it's position on the High Street. doctorhoo - 1 Jan 2009 22:03 |
