This large pub in a semi-rural setting is part of the Chef & Brewer chain. It is very much a food-orientated pub doing a fairly standard 2 course for £12 menu. I was told by my drinking companion that it can get very busy and that the food is OK. We were here to drink and I'm afraid this was not a good move. Adnams Broadside and Wells Bombardier were the two real ales. I had a pint of the latter, and it was unpalatable and stale. We left after one pint. What else can we say? The bar staff were friendly enough and the crisps at 95 pence tasted better than the beer. Number11 - 23 Apr 2014 18:00 |
can somebody please explain why, IDC review above about this pub is from 2008 and yet only posted 15th Jan 2010???? did it really take that long to construct a review?? lets hope he does not review the Harvester as it's menu is slightly more complex that we could be waiting a little too long for it to be of any use!!! andrewdm - 23 Apr 2012 01:54 |
My last visit here was memorable, but unfortunately for the wrong reasons. It was late summer 2008. On arrival the board outside said all food freshly cooked to order using seasonal ingredients. We ordered our main courses and within a couple of minutes our main courses arrived (freshly cooked to order?) with sprouts amongst the veg (seasonal veg - this was early August! - also had leaflets on the tables for Christmas and New Year bookings!). Found out the pub was part of the dreaded Spire Inns empire, so the meals are delivered ready made and just wopped in the microwave for a couple of minutes. Beer was OK but limited and very pricey. Shame, this is potentially a lovely pub, in a great location, and I can remember really enjoying the food and drink in years gone by, so glad to read in the last post it was up for sale. Hopefully new owners free of the dreaded pub chains will restore it to it's former glory! idc - 15 Jan 2010 23:42 |
Apparently this place is up for sale, as Punch Taverns try to reduce their debts. A new owner could do a lot here if they pay more attention to the food and increase the range of beers. It's a large and atmospheric building with a car park and views of light planes taking off from Elstree aerodrome. historyloony - 18 Oct 2009 11:07 |
Didn't eat there, but the beer was quite nice and not too outrageously priced. Nice 'traditional' decor. DarkLordOfBarnet - 2 Jul 2009 23:26 |
