| Our first visit to this pub. Ales on offer were Gem, 6X, Henry's IPA and Stonehenge Pig Swill which was my choice. The Pig Swill was in superb condition, very tasty and served at a good temperature. The pub, for a Thursday night, was surprisingly busy, most tables were taken with diners. the menu was not very extensive - maybe 10 choices, but those choices looked quality meals. I had Lamb shank which was very nice and hot - it did need additional gravy/jus to stop it being too dry but that was the only problem. My wife's vegetarian selection of goats cheese was good but could have had more salad / vegetables to accompany it - certainly more than what was offered. Desserts were very good indeed. | Visited for the first time last week. Very nice pub in pleaseant village with 4 ales, Otter Bitter, Wadworth 6X, another Wadworth which I can't remember and, yep, you guessed it, Doom Bar. | Wadworths 6X & Henry�s IPA, Ramsbury Bitter, Oxfordshire Ales Pride of Oxford. Low beamed bar area, pewter tankards hanging around the servery, large inglenook with ancient wood lintel to the rt, coal burning stove to the left, 2 recessed window seats with pine tables, rear left of bar is rustic dining area, to the right a larger room decorated with aforementioned land tools on bare brick walls, dark wood furniture, horse brasses. This area also serves as the breakfast room, but was quiet fri evening, unlike the bar which was a positive buzz of local chatter, thinning out ~20:00. Food is all listed on chalkboards in bar area and was very good eg (our selection) mushroom �pepperpot�, smoked chicken & bacon salad, pork tenderloin stuffed wi black pudding, wrapped in bacon, homemade neeld burger, starters ~�6, mains �9-�12, separate veggie options. Good accom too, our room (#2) had probably the widest bed I�ve seen, spotless bathroom, �80 b&b (for 2), & breakfast was good (v tasty sausages). | Was in there yesterday lunchtime (Saturday) and there were quite a few in, so hopefully the Neeld Arms is weathering the recession. Superb beer (Ramsbury, 3.6%, perfect for lunchtime) and lovely food. | Went here twice in a week and great both times, as usual. Menu good, but wish they would bring the good old mixed grill back as that was sublime. Beer condition superb on ales tried, as usual and the landlord as friendly as ever (Has he got the deepest voice you've ever heard or what? Nice guy!) as were the other staff. Sadly very empty on both a Friday dinner & Saturday eve which I guess is a sign of the times and the fact that this country pub, as nice as it is, has no real passing trade cannot help. Worrying times for all the licensed trade at present - let's hope great hostelries such as the Neeld Arms march on through as they deserve to. MisterX - 11 May 2009 03:45 |
