user reviews of the Fox And Hounds, Donnington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

According to their website this has now been renamed "Harry's Bar and Kitchen". I always respected Arkell's Brewery (the owners) as being proud of their traditional pub and brewing heritage. This reduces my respect for them by several notches. I suppose there may be people who think the new name is better but personally I think it's idiotic.

Decent country pub serving Arkells beers. Unfortunately it's right next to the A34, but still worth a visit.

Post script: I forgot to mention yet another plus about this pub - it's dog friendly; indeed, it has a host of canine regulars.

Friendly family-run pub with a good local following. Events are organised by Rose, the co-landlady; the pub raised well over 1,000 for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance at its Summer Fete on the 19th July 2008. Bingo, quizzes, darts etc all have their place in the pub's calendar.

Food is served until 9pm and ranges from snacks to full meals - both of which can be eaten in either the bar or the restaurant. As a vegetarian, it's great to find omelettes on a menu ... and the Fox and Hounds allows you to choose the filling. The puddings are not run-of-the-mill 'sweets', which is another plus.

This is a comfortable pub with good beer, good food and good company.

Used to be the finest, greatest pub in the whole wide world. Landlord (Harry) always missing and Jane the barmaid ran EVERYTHING. Now she knew about beer, food and a happy welcome. It was virtually her pub in all but name.

Open fires in the winter, several guest ales. Tons of different local groups used to use this pub as a meeting place. Because it was, quite simply, 'THE BEST'

Then Harry left, Jane went elsewhere and the present bunch of chuckle-heads took over. Beer no longer cared for, food a bit hit and miss (when it's on). No smile, no welcome, "give us your money and go" seems to be the order of the day.
Small garden at front. Showered by lead exhaust fumes from the A34 which runs straight along the back of the pub and above the height of the pub. So all fumes and carcinogens (from diesel) fall and cascade over the whole pub.

A good pub gone bad.
