Visited the pub twice over the weekend, the second time with ten other people. The service was excellent both times, the food first class. Every dish was hot, the vegetables done to perfection too. A friend who calls himself a 'steak pie aficionado' said that the pie at the A and C was the best that he had ever had. Couldn't fault anything. It is a shame that it is not closer than one and half hours drive away! Don't miss this gem. Only given it a 7 as the beer choice was limited to Pedigree. inkywebber - 1 Aug 2011 16:50 |
Been a regular at this pub since about 1999. Seen it change hands about five times in that period, the previous owners Bob and Brian did wonders for this place, great food and always a decent pint, all clean and tidy. The present owners took over three or four years back, it was a hard act to follow, but the level of service has remained I am pleased to say. Friendly, hard working, always trying to please the customer with decent pub grub (restaurant can get very busy) and still get a few locals in the bar, although close tothe Ross - Hereford road, you can hardly hear it and overall, this pub is well worth stopping off at. Nice to see it still thriving!!! BromsgroveRover - 6 Jun 2009 14:56 |
I visited the Axe and Clever having heard great reviews but was unfortunately disappointed. When we arrived and asked if food was still being served (at 9pm) we were told by the bar person that she would check as the chef was in a bad mood and she wasn't sure if he would still be cooking. She returned to say we could place an order. We looked at the menu and my companion chose breaded mushrooms to start followed by steak. Being uninspried by the selection of starters I settled with a fillet steak. The menu was not seasonal and appeared to be filled with dishes that would be reheated to order. My companions mushroom were, as I expected , frozen. Although the deep fried breadcrumbs were crispy the mushroom inside was slimy and tasteless. The dipping sauce was out of a jar and loaded with sugar. My steak arrived served with frozen peas, greasy chips and a salad garnish. The steak unfortunately was overcooked, I asked for rare but got medium, it was also tasteless and not as tender as a good fillet should be. The staff were plesant and service quick, but the food was very disappointing given it is located in Herefordshire which is a fabulous county for fresh local seasonal food including fabulous beef. lizh - 12 May 2008 17:09 |
An excellent roadhouse, very old, not exactly intimate but always welcoming. Large menu always available; Marstons Pedigree usually the best beer on tap. Pleasant, well-tended garden for those summer days. Jon Elphick - 9 Jun 2006 08:51 |
