I see this hasn't been reviewed since 2015, so would like to recommend a visit...The George is a Lovely old coaching inn that gets the balance between pub and inn just wright. The bar area is friendly with lots of locals, but you always feel the food and service to be that of an inn. Beers were Two Cocks Roundhead bitter and Beavertown neck oil, plus lots of lagers and ciders. Dog friendly including rooms, which is a bonus in this lovely area. I'm guessing most people stay a night or two passing through too or from the many lovely towns and cities this area offers. Owner is also the chef I think, and the food was top notch... Word on the street is that Hughen and Joyce Riley, from the Silver Plough at Pitton, are taking over. Surely this can only be good news for the George. Not so good news for Hall and Woodhouse, they'll be losing yet another good management couple. Maybe one day they will realise.........licensees need to make a living, not pay extortionate rents!!! Good luck Joyce and Hughen!!! wolvesfan - 22 Apr 2011 18:44 |
I have now tried on three occasions to get into this pub and it's always shut!!! Visited (or tried to!!) last Wednesday at around 1pm and alas.......SHUT, curtains closed, no sign of life. Went to the White Hart, down the road, and there was a group in there having their Christmas 'works lunch', problem was they were suppose to be enjoying it in the George!!!! Oh well, another licensee about to visit the bankruptcy courts no doubt...... Watch this space. wolvesfan - 17 Dec 2010 18:23 |
The pub is much better now it has had its refit. Good choice of beer and food so it should attract more locals. Although it is hard work for strangers to suceed in this village. Worth a visit. The two ugly dogs moved back to essex a few years ago :-) shaddy - 18 Jul 2009 08:42 |
