user reviews of the Royal Oak, Poringland

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Royal Oak was the best of 9 pubs I sampled in Norfolk on Saturday. It has a good range of beers, along with a real cider and a perry. Beers on were Sharps Doom Bar, Ossian Independence, St Peters Organic Best Bitter, Wolf Straw Dog, Cottage Champflower Ale, Woodfordes Wherry, Abbeydale Daily Bread & Rudgate On Target. The cider was Gwynt y Ddraig Farmhouse Scrumpy and the perry was from Broadoak. Inside, it is cosy and there are a few separate drinking areas and a dining room. The landlord was welcoming. We sampled the chip shop next door. They had some very tasty food. Although the portions were a little miserly. The Royal Oak is definitely worth the journey out of Norwich for. We continued on to the Globe in Shotesham (not listed on here), which did not quite have the same appeal.

Welcoming pub, just the job after a round of golf or other physical exercise. 6+ real ales on + 4 ciders. Good supporter of local ales and ciders. Plenty of local photos and memorabilia to please those who get fed up with endless twee horse brasses. If there is a downside there is no food, but............there is an (unconnected) superb chippy next door - the landlords will allow you to bring their wares in and scoff to your heart's content as long as you tidy up after yourself. Best of British compromises!

They've clearly worked hard to provide real ales in ambient setting, all good stuff. Only downside is proscriptive and slightly regimented pub owners who can be a little stiff and off-putting.

9 ales on my visit including 2 from yarmouths blackfriars brewery, beer fans enjoy.

situated 5 miles from Norwich on the B1332. A free house with usually at least 12 real ales, all in superb condition. Holds a beer festival twice a year,(spring & autumn) No food. Large car park
