This old coaching inn has wood-panelled rooms and up to recently, the decor has kept in theme - but some misguided soul thought some modern features would improve it - which was something of a surprise, having visited numerous times over the years. Food has become increasingly pricey and at the same time less impressive; vegetarians should look elsewhere. Service slow. As one of the upper echelons of the Greene King empire, the bar has the usual G-K beers plus guests at high prices. Probably ok if you want accommodation in a historic inn, but if you want a pub, walk across the green to the Bell. Mike_Oxford - 31 Jan 2018 11:49 |
Superb old inn. Good beer and food. Cosy old accommodation which can be reasonably priced if you look for one of Old English Inns'' many offers. Manager Derek has recently taken over and is doing a god job (he has managed several local Greene King Inns). You can also walk across the road to the equally good but very different Coach and Horses. Beautiful location too. SPB - 29 Oct 2012 16:01 |
We left the M40 Motorway to find a pleasant pub for a meal whilst on a journey south from Manchester. The Red Lion looked good and it was good. Three real beers on offer 20.11.11. The food was home made and good value. The staff went out of their way to be helpful about the choice of beers. I went for the Howell Brewery beer - very tasty and well kept. Easy access and parking.
