Traditional looking pub in the centre of the village that is very food-oriented having been bought and is now owned & managed by a well-known local chef. We arrived for dinner at 8.45pm on a Saturday evening and the place was over half full, with food service ending at 9pm apparently the place was packed earlier. This isn't a food review so all I'll say is the food was very good, well priced & with quality ingredients. 3 ales on cask and John Smiths on keg. The cask ales were Timothy Taylor's Landlord, York Brewery Guzzler and Ossett Brewery Yorkshire Blonde. The Guzzler was very good. Flooring is a mix of stripped wooden, flagstones and original tiles. All of the walls are in a neutral colour. Medium sized wooden bar with ornate brass foot rail. I found a nice friendly atmosphere on my visit with the all the bar man being chatty and attentive giving a great service. The ales choices were good with my pint being well kept and poured. More of a food pub than a traditional pub but does great food and does retain a bar area with high stools. lezford - 5 Dec 2015 21:30 |
Only two real ales on the list, both local and one of them was off - choice of 1 - not a good start. And so to the food ... for a fairly quiet Thursday the Burgers were out of stock, the Lasagne turned out to be a strange orange coloured sauce with very little in it (plus a token side-salad) and ... no sponge pudding. Can't provide the very basics ? Sorry - I couldn't recommend this to anyone. Ghost_Man - 14 Jun 2012 21:58 |
Unlike the previous poster, we had very good service and excellent food here. Not an out and out restaurant pub (unlike those that have all the tables laid for eating) but not really a 'local' either. It was a quiet Monday lunchtime when we were there, though, I dare say race days are very different - York racecourse is about a mile away. . The Black Sheep was very acceptable, but wine by the glass was limited - my sister wanted a Sauvignon Blanc but there was none and had to settle for a Pinot Grigio - which was fine, but not her first choice. . My father had a roast beef dinner, I had a beef baguette (really thick slices of beef), and my sister had an enormous jacket potato with prawns. Nothing to complain about at all - we were recommended this pub by a friend who used to live in York, and our taxi driver also had heard good things about it. He also recommended the Ebor just down the road from here, but we didn't get in there. Gzornenplat - 10 May 2011 09:59 |
