I visited the Royal Oak in Blisworth a few years back. But now I had returned to try the Walnut Tree. The latter is located alongside the railway tracks of the West Coast mainline. The focus appears to be on the hotel business and the bar does have the feel of a hotel bar, despite the presence of a number of locals. Ales were Towcester Mill Mill Race, Great Oakly Wagtail, Sharps Doom Bar & Phipps NBC India Pale Ale. A reasonable selection of ales. But the bar lacked atmosphere and just didn't do it for me.

Seriously unimpressed. The beer was expensive and not especially well kept and the girl behind the bar was very reluctant to give me a full pint. The food was ok but over priced. I was part of a small party and the staff, who seemed to have been dumped to get on with things with little or no training, managed to muddle the order and nearly forgot one meal altogether. The credit card machine in the bar wasn't working either. How it ever made it to the Good Beer Guide is a mystery to me.

Well, judging by the past comments this place must have changed quite a lot in the last few years.

We stopped off during a trip on the grand union canal for lunch and had an amazing meal. I had fish and chips (best ever!!) and my partner had the vegetarian burger, which she said had many layers of interesting flavours and was served with a carrot and caraway seed salad and chips, which she couldn't finish, which was a shame because we saw some desserts come out and they looked luscious! A little pricey for pub food, but definitely worth it.

Had a couple of pints of the local beer, Wagtail, which was light, clean and fruity and she had a half of Krombacher, a proper German lager.

The friendly chap who served us said that the Walnut Tree had won the best pub food award in the northants food competition and had just been awarded pub of the season by the local CAMRA branch.

A local pub for local people.Public bar very unwelcoming with chav seated at bar with his large dog ,at least on a lead, but lunging at me while ordering.(The dog that is.) Smokers committee at the front door also offputting.Phipps IPA on handpump was indifferent and we decided to leave rather than risk a meal. The proximity to a caravan site probably explains the issues with this place.Might be your cup of tea if you want to catch some local bands at the weekend.

Called by on the 23rd of December.A good selection of real ale. The public bar was a little gloomy but there was a large crowd of enthusiastic regulars enjoying a fancy dress outing. The Sunday roast was good value and very tasty.
