Such a shame, the tale of Smiles' demise is a sad one indeed. How many places are there in the 21st century where you can be in the trendy city centre, and have a pint of ale brewed in the brewery next door. And we're not talking micro-brewery scale, every barrel of Smiles made originated from this place. The 10 brewery tour with generous "tastings" and a meal thrown in was fantastic. Sadly once Smiles sold their 7 or 8 pubs to Youngs, they lost the outlet for most of their product and things went down hill. Too small to compete in the UK ale market but too big for micro scale. And getting lorries down Park Row can't have been easy. The brewery closed and the atmosphere in the tap never really recovered. When you consider the excellent pubs all around that area, plus the opening of the very nice Zero Degrees over the road it was never going to last. Just a shame that such an icon has turned into presumably yet another tacky block of overpriced flats. OldRogue - 19 Jun 2007 13:22 |
