What a find. Staying at local hotel who told us the best pub in Old Windsor was the Harvester! Couldn't believe it so we walked down to the village and found this gem of a pub. Great big fire in the middle of the pub made for a good start. Great looking girls behind the bar, the place was buzzing with most looking at the football. All good humoured and absolutely no aggro. Eight of us in the group, ordered a range of stuff from the menu -- food just fantastic. We all had a good drink and would have stayed longer but for the landlord who wasn't into lock-ins. Shame, everything else about the pub was brillant. rupertgitts - 26 Jan 2012 22:45 |
What amazed me about The Fox & Castle was the barmaid's knowledge about and interest in real ales. When returning for a second pint of Ascot's Alligator I was asked if I was enjoying my ale, told that the pub always stocked at least one local ale as a rule and that Windsor & Eton's Guardsman was next up followed by a Marlow ale called Mutiny. The ale was great, the pub was buzzing and the garden full of children & families. gord_newrd - 4 Sep 2011 14:05 |
Three of us ordered food and the meal took longer than I would expect. We had a burger, sea bass served on a bed of leek & pea risotto and a lamb & pepper casserole. They say everything is home-made and it's easy to believe as the food was just great. Fresh, hot, full of flavour and at 35 including a couple of drinks, good value. The girls behind the bar are friendly and helpful, the toilets are clean and other customers seemed happy & relaxed. Despite the wait for our food this was one of the most enjoyable pub experiences I've had in a long time. eva1960 - 6 Aug 2011 16:14 |
Half way round our 8.5 mile walk and we arrived at Old Windsor and its choice of 3 pubs. After a bit of mulling we plumped for the Fox and Castle. A large pub in a suburban setting, we tripled the number of customers as we entered. This was the first pub that I have been in selling Windsor and Eton Brewery Guardsman, so all four of us plumped for that. Beer was OK, although one of our number thought his was near the end of the barrel and was unimpressed. Food was good value - my burger and chips was only 6.95 and was a pretty decent portion size. Pub has a giant TV and the usual Sky Sports rubbish but on the whole a reasonable place. It could do with some more customers though. ramblethenlunch - 18 Jul 2011 14:48 |
Popped in to The Fox & Castle for a pint of Guardsman and was pleasently surprised to see it was one of four ales available. I had the Guardsman and a pint of Adnams Broadside both of which were very good. The other two were Courage Best & London Pride. The menu looked pretty good and reasonably priced. I didn't eat, but the food that came out of the kitchen looked great and diners seemed happy. A friendly & warm traditional pub, I'll be back. mark_harpor - 5 Jan 2011 17:25 |
