Played skittles here last week. Things may be improving. Only one rael ale, Doombar, but it was excellent. Landlord still grumpy though. Mind you I would have expected a smile from him after paying 3.10 a pint.

Changed a bit since last reviews. Indiifferent service, food, beer and landlord.

Built to serve Miners during combe down's stone mining past, this pub now prides itself on its good service and real ales.

The ales are well kept and well served, and the landlord is very knowlegeable about his beers.

As a pub it is a typical local. There is a slot machine but it isnt excessively loud, and welcomes both locals and strangers alike.

First and only visit here last weekend courtesy of the Good Beer Guide.
Despite a picturesque and rather genteel exterior, inside lurks a genuine, down-to-earth community local that has no pretentions.
Although it is not aimed at the ale enthusiast per se, the pub does offer a reasonable selection of well-kept beers (the Butcombe sampled was on good form).
This is a friendly, convivial place, enhanced by good service (in my limited experience at any rate), and just because you mightn't be local doesn't mean you'll receive an indifferent or hostile welcome. Not bad at all.
