user reviews of the Plough Inn, Hickling

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is a pub that I had previously recommended, but my last visit wasn’t so good… It was a Bank Holiday Monday, so perhaps the previous day had taken it's toll… We were planning to eat, but the chef had a quite public moan in the bar listing everything that he hadnt got, which was most of the menu. The staff seemed generally unhappy at having to be there, and the atmosphere just wasnt good. We had a pint and moved on. I'm generally on the positive side with my posts (check for yourselves), and I will return to this pub, but the whole point of this site is to be honest...

I cannot speak highly enough of this pub. It is set in the lovely, rural village of Hickling, literally on the (now defunct) Grantham canal. If you visit, do allow time to walk the tow path (The canal is restored from the basin towards Grantham, but still overgrown towards Nottingham, which makes it almost more beautiful). The pub is an elegant building with two or three small rooms. It has a lovely sun-deck outside, as well as a lawned area and then a kids play area with bouncy castle and swings etc...very child friendly. Beers on offer were Everards Festiv Pale, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Adnams & Navigation Hickling Best Bitter. Ciders were Thatchers and Rekorderlig. Lager was Erdinger plus others… We had a meal which was also excellent and reasonably priced with mains around £8. Home made chips were lovely... A marquee also seems to being constructed further down the garden, so maybe weddings and parties will be on offer. We will be back...

A lovely pub which we stumbled upon. Really tasty simple food, locally sourced meat and vegetables, very child friendly and extremely helpful. Four rooms for drinking/eating in: one formal dining room, one lounge room with sofas, one small nook room with bar tables, and up the stairs to the upper bar with bar tables and an open fire. This was where we sat and felt that this was the most inviting room where most socialising was going on. It was lovely and warm throughout the pub (great for a really cold dank day) and we went out for a nice walk afterwards along the nearby Grantham Canal. The beer (London Pride) was well cared for and very tasty. Wish this was my local!

A very welcoming country pub for locals and out-of-villagers alike. Well kept real ales from around the country and really good food.
