7 years since my last review of this pub and not much has changed. Still excellent beers - Thumper, 49er, Summer Lightening. HSB has improved drastically since I last wrote. My only criticism is that they've followed the latest craze of having Doom Bar - what's the attraction? Few pubs can rival one this for quality of beer. MarkM - 30 Aug 2013 10:00 |
The Limes was our last stop of the day and seemed like a reasonably nice place. It's in a rather odd location. You can see the pub sign quite clearly. But then you have to drive around a corner to find the pub itself, which didn't initially look open. It may all be easier during daylight hours. Once inside, we found it fairly busy. The ale range was good - Ringwood Best, Forty Niner & Old Thumper, Gales HSB, Hopback Summer Lightning, Sharps Own & Doom Bar, plus Mr Whiteheads Heart of Hampshire cider. However, we were a bit taken aback by the landladys response when we only ordered only one drink between the two of us. As it was our 10th pub of the day, my better half was feeling a little waterlogged. But the landlady's only interest was in her lost revenue. This could have been a pub I'd recommend. But in an all too competetive environment, I expect good service these days. Sadly, it seems you won't find it here (possibly unless you're local). I read earlier in the day in the local CAMRA magazine that a demolition order has been placed on the pub. Whilst I hate losing characterful pubs like this, it's often a case of survival of the fittest and I fear that the landlady's attitude way well drag this place down. Or maybe I caught her on an 'off night'? blue_scrumpy - 18 Mar 2012 12:13 |

"Dark and empty" eh? Well, BITE users must speak as they find, but I rather think that comment short-changes this place, which I found - albeit on a Saturday lunchtime - to be a light and airy affair, that was reasonably busy and all things being equal, a perfectly convivial pub. We'd made a dash over here in desperate need for the gents, which fortunately were found in acceptable form, and used liberally. Once inside the long bar area, one felt the sense of slight datedness in the decor, fixtures and fittings, which was reminiscent of Fawlty Towers-era hotel bars. Saying that however, it did not jar unduly, and after a while I revised that rather harsh initial impression and settled upon a Royal British Legion club as the closest ally to the Limes' atmosphere; a sort of stoical comfort and quiet defiance in the face of unbridled change all around it. Ales were served from the cask direct, which suited us perfectly well. Ringwood Porter? Yes please, and conditioned nicely too - if only more punters were making the most of it as opposed to the flavourless fizz. The barman was attentive and pleasant, and all in all there was a pervasive feeling of steady, civilised enjoyment on the part of the predominantly middle-aged crowd. Not for everyone I imagine, but for those who can't recall how so many pubs in the 1970s and '80s used to be in these parts, go to the Limes and it will give you a broad idea. And the joy of it being 2011 and not 1981 is that you can enjoy decent cask beer! TWG - 9 Feb 2011 17:07 |
Dark and empty, but the HSB was excellent and I can see the attraction of the pub on a busy night. mtaylor40 - 19 Nov 2010 23:40 |
