I quite liked the Kingston Arms. It's on the main Newport Road heading south out of Cowes. As we approached it, it seemed closed. But we noticed an open door and found 3 small rooms, a landlord and a solitary customer. The interior is nicely decorated with plenty of odds and sods. The main bar is dominated by a pool table. Goddards Fuggle Dee-Dum & Yates Golden were the 2 ales. A 3rd handpull had the clipped turned round. No real cider was available. There is a table outside, if you fancy some sunchine! I'm not sure how this pub survives with only one customer here on a Saturday afternoon. But I hope it does, as it has a really homely feel and at least has a couple of ales from the island, rather than mainland/mainstream beers. blue_scrumpy - 23 Aug 2015 12:57 |
Possibly the best pub in Cowes. Tatty but atmospheric interior and a chatty landlord. Three reasonably priced beers sourced from IOW breweries. Highly recommended. baxterfish - 3 Nov 2010 07:15 |
This is a great 'proper boozer'! I opted for Yates Undercliff, which was lovely, although the 'locals' call it a Pat Derby - not sure why? Also on offer - Wight Knight - a bit strong for me, but would make a great knockout beer if you didn't have work in the morning! I was also offered a taster of Fuggle - which was perfect! I have to say the Landlord knows how to keep his cellar! The locals were friendly, the 'banter' second to none - truly an old original, keeping the spirit of the boozer well and truly alive. There is a piano in the centre, not played often, but if you can get someone on it, an impromptu sing song is a must - just like the old days! Can't wait to go back next year! oldwindsorian - 10 Aug 2010 10:29 |
Friendliest pub on the island and excellent booze....spent the evening bashing a papier-mache croc with a stick, and being rewarded with fruit flavoured sweets. That beats Sky sports anyday. Top 5 island boozer. man_versus_horse - 28 Sep 2009 18:04 |
The second visit for me at the Kingston last Saturday. The first one being a tad hazy a few years back!! It's an excellent pub. Good ale and good friendly service. The interior is comfotable and cosy - it feels more like a friends living room!! Made to feel very welcome and certainly one of my favourites on the Island. Highly recommended from me.
