First visit to this pub was in 1977 as part of a touring bar billiards team from the mainland. At the time I rated it 'the best pub in the world'. Not sure about that now, but still try and pop in whenever we're visiting the island. tommo5 - 28 Jul 2011 17:49 |
We were just finishing the round the island cycle when we happened across this place. As others have said its a bit of a mish-mash between bar/restaurant that doesn't quite get what its trying to be. First impressions were that we would need to have booked and should be smarter than our rain-soaked selves, but we were made to feel welcome. We arrived in the middle of Sunday lunch and were treated to two fantastic roast dinners (8.95 each, worth every penny!). Mine was beef, cooked perfectly, and hers was the chicken, again without any complaint. Each had a decent side of veg and the best roast potatoes I've had in months!! Overall I plan to return on another sunday to enjoy the roast again, and would give 10/10 for my dinner. The confused atmosphere and the fact I couldnt see myself drinking there bring the overall review down to an 8 though. ebunick - 4 May 2010 16:29 |
Grubby and a bit expensive but my idea of heaven for friendliness and genuine warmth. The food wont kill you and it's good for a late drink. Perfick. justinfromwork - 31 Jan 2009 17:14 |
The Duke o York is a peculiar place. Part Hotel, Part formal dining, part bar. Its not as upmarket as that sounds. Its more old fashioned. The rooms are average B n B. The grub is average. The beer is kept bady, but they've generally got three good uns on. There's lots of cheesy nautical stuff littering the bar but most odd feature of the bar is the furniture: the place makes you feel unwelcome if you're not eating, not because its particularly exclusive or big on food, but because the place is full of dining tables and chairs. This pub is best used as a warm-up, and warm-down from a night in Cowes if you live in East Cowes on your way from/to the Floating Bridge. BrianHaigh - 6 Nov 2008 23:41 |
