One of the best of the many pubs on this stretch of road into chesterfield, good ales, dog friendly and the sort of place it's easy to strike up a chat with the locals or the staff.

After a brief stop in the nearby Victoria, our penultimate pub in Chesterfield was the Peacock. This is another fine Chesterfield pub with friendly locals and staff that were eager to involve us in conversation, something that really is the sign of a good pub. The ale range was fairly limited. But I guess this merely encourages better turnover of the beers and judging by the conversation, they do seem to have plenty of variety. During our visit, they had Caledonian Deuchars IPA & Flying Scotsman, Black Sheep Golden Sheep & Barlow Black. Both of the 2 rooms are fairly small and cosy. Sadly, the last pub we visited (Barrack Hotel at Apperknowle) is not listed on here, but was equally friendly.

Nice enough old style pub of two halves. Had a pint of Barlow Calendar which was just about palatable.

Starting to look a bit tired inside and facing stiff local competition now that the nearby Rose and Crown has been made over as a Brampton Brewery pub, but The Peacock remains a popular choice for real ale enthusiasts in this part of town. A regular in the Good Beer Guide, and winner of one of the Chesterfield CAMRA branch's Pub Of The Season awards.

Classic beer drinkers local; proper pub conversation in the tap room, very good beer range and quality
