Wasn't overly impressed with this place. The ale range was one of the best we found in East Yorkshire - Black Mill Black Gold, Crafty Little Brewery Wolf Bite IPA & Chameleon, Yorkshire Brewhouse YPA, Theakston Best Bitter & Timothy Taylor Landlord. But service from the young staff left a lot to be desired. There is a bar area at the front and a dining area at the rear. But one of the barmaids asked us if we had checked if there had been any tables in the bar where we could have sat at, instead of in the dining area. There hadn't been. But she still decided to go and check. But why would you query this, when there more spare tables than occupied ones in the dining area. Very strange behaviour and one that is probably enforced on the young impressionable staff. They clearly value diners more than drinkers, which is a shame, as the pub has potential. blue_scrumpy - 26 Mar 2018 21:22 |
Things are looking up here once again. The beer is good. Seems to be getting a younger person's reputation but now they have the Bear Inn across the road maybe a good mix can be achieved. Not so keen on the food though - that has some way to go and speaking to a local I hear the turn over of staff means standard vary by the week. Will try again in a few weeks to see if things have settled down. Dog still there though - the dog drool was very off putting and no one seemed bothered. peaps - 30 Jan 2011 15:59 |
Back in business again under the stewardship of Mike who used to run it when it was a popular locals pub. Glad to hear he will be having live music nights again. I will call in soon and report back on the beer. RB1066 - 12 Jul 2010 15:38 |
Yet another new manager in May 2009 (Shane) who is keeping it ticking over while owners Enterprise try to find another new operator. Its had turbulent times but this is a genuine olde British pub that MUST be preserved. Not sure that dogs in the restaurant is very healthy though. RadioMann - 20 May 2009 02:07 |
whilst on an Easter weekend break at withernsea where we own a static carravan, we decided to visit south cave (which i have to say is a beautiful village) to have a look round the farmers market, whilst there we called in the fox and coney for a spot of lunch and a drink. The girl who was behind the bar was very friendly and welcoming and the pub had an excellent choice of real ales i opted for a pint of Theakston's XB it was a lovely drink, for food I ordered the hot beef and onion sandwich on ciabatta and a bowl of chips, my wife ordered the pancetta black pudding and chorizo salad. when my lunch arrived it was presented quite average, cut in half with a crescent of crisps the ciabatta would have been a lot better if it had been warmed through in the oven for a couple of minutes to crisp it up. the beef was the ready cooked sliced beef in gravy with a few chopped red onions in it and the chips were undercooked, it was disapointing. My wifes lunch came and it looked fantastic very well presented on a big white plate with lovely fresh crisp salad topped with chorizo, black pudding and crispy pancetta the plate was garnished with a balsamic dressing and it tasted absolutely delicious we found it amazing that these two dishes came from the same kitchen, all in all we enjoyed our visit my wife enjoyed the food and i enjoyed the Beer. i would call in again if i was visiting south cave but i would avoid the hot beef and onion sandwich and chips. keyz1511 - 11 Apr 2009 17:19 |
