It's the Swan not the Swann. Number11 - 19 May 2014 22:11 |
Firstly, this is not really a pub - it's a Hall & Woodhouse eaterie which manages to sell a couple of Badger beers (Badger and Billy Stinger) at the bar. The beer was OK. A party of nine of us visited to celebrate my mother's birthday. The tables were very nicely laid out, but unfortunately the service, while friendly and polite, was very slow. The food, I'm afraid, was not great. The king prawn starters had to be sent back becuase they were soggy and disintegrating, the cheddar cheese and potato rissoles, or whatever they call them, were distinctly uncheesy. Some of the mains such as the fish and chips were well-received, but the chicken and wild mushroom pie was just a pool of liquid with a few strands of chicken. The salad was disappointing. The total cost for nine of us including a rather generous 10% tip, all things considered, came to almost £310. Given that this included only one bottle of wine, plus a few pints of ale and lager, was definitely on the steep side. To be frank, the meal was disappointing, given the price, and I won't be eating there for a while yet. Number11 - 19 May 2014 22:08 |
Went for pub lunch with family, was greeted by waiter with menu ... this is really more of a restaurant than a pub. It was the only local place still doing food (about 2:30 pm). Food very pricey for pub food, but well cooked and generous portions. Interior design very characterless in spite of attractive exterior. Beer OK and not over-priced. Garden OK but pub is on a busy road. In short, nothing to complain about but I won't rush to return, especially if I don't want food. newbury_drinker - 24 Jan 2010 11:09 |
Having always been happy with the food and service at the Swan, we decided to take an important guest tonight. We had great expectations (8th visit since reopening) but the service tonight disappointed and rouined the whole evening. This was NOT due to the chef or kitchen staff, who I must applaud on their culinary skills. The food was perfectly presented as per the menu and quality was excellent, but if you are looking for a complete experience go elsewhere. Firstly, although we made a reservation we were still given the worst table in the restaurant (next to the toilet) although other tables were clearly empty. We let this go, as we had previously been delighted by our visits and were giving them the benefit of the doubt. WRONG! The staff tonight were not up to scratch, sorry but that's the only way I can discribe their effort tonight! This is a fatal error as food and service go hand in hand, one, without the other, fails! Good food can only be appreciated if served professionally and with a smile ! However the service tonight was detrimental to the meal and makes us question whether to recommend this pub to anyone. Value for money - food yes, service NO. The wine by the glass selection is not available as per menu and I wasn't advised of this until I had been completely humiliated! NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THIS STANDARD OF RESTAURANT/PUB! If you price wine by the glass you should sell it or remove it from your wine list. mjclharrison - 21 Mar 2009 23:21 |
Last night we visited to The Swan since the recent major refurbishment. WOW. The pub looks fantastic. We spent the first ten minutes wondering around trying to work out what use to be were. There is now a large heated patio to the front and the garden is as beautiful as before, but with a new patio and a less rickety bridge crossing the stream! The food I think it was called a tapas board to share for starters. Very good and just enough for me and mrs picky. Mains was venison steak and fish pie. Finished off with crumble and chocolate fondant. The service excellent. The young lady could not have been more helpful and talked us through the menus and specials in just the right detail. Regret have waited until now to go back to the Swan. Already thinking about booking for this coming Sunday. I guess that some will not like the changes at the Swan, but we could not fault it. picky77 - 1 Oct 2008 15:05 |
