Great building and characterful interior with great views out over the front. Food served midweek is rather poor though - seemingly supplied by a vast industrial caterer for warming up, decoration and serving at the pub. You get a lot on your plate but I didn't come close to finishing it (unusual for a mean slob like me). FannyBlancmange - 5 May 2014 14:09 |
Not sure how this got into the Good Beer Guide as (a) there was only 1 beer on when we visited and (b) it was like a children's room with adults being allowed in for a drink! You could hardly see the handpumps for themassive keg fonts on the bar. Some nice old Victorian touches and you could see what this must have been like in its heyday. But tatty seating; screaming kids and lacklustre staff made for an unpleasant visit. (Sunday lunch on the menu but my wife's coffee was a mug of Nescafe from the kitchen!) mcroyal - 27 Aug 2013 12:30 |
Disappointed by this one. Arrived about 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon there were four young girls worling and one local. There was Twaites Wainswrights and Tetley Bitter on. Ordered two Wainwrights but the barrel needed changing so the owners would have to be called down from upstairs. About 15 minutes later she told us the pipes were being cleaned. We left and went to the exceptionally good Strawberry Gardens instead. Good sized pub and the staff were friendly but didn't know what they were doing. I don't think the owners knew what they were doing either cleaning the pipes in the middle of their Saturday lunchtime session! Rod_Hariga - 18 Aug 2013 15:53 |
Nice enough big old hotel bar, maybe a little shabby in places. Friendly enough, although when I called on Saturday lunchtime there seemed to be more staff than customers. 3 handpumps, and I enjoyed a well-kept pint of Wainwright's. Overall though, I preferred the Strawberry Gardens which is a 10-minute walk away. Stamfordian - 28 Jan 2013 12:21 |
Friendly, large pub with good quality ales, although they are a bit unadventurous. pwilkins - 25 Oct 2012 11:39 |
