| Large roadside pub in the centre of Mickleover. Part of Spirit’s “Flaming Grill” chain, not a brand that I’d encountered before, but something tells me this might be one of the better examples. For a start the areas which are allocated to drinkers / food orders are obvious (even if not officially designated). There are a large number of tables adjacent to the bar which have no menus / cutlery, so it’s clear these are meant for drinkers. There were a total of 8 beers on handpump, though most of these were national brands like Doom Bar and Speckled Hen, with only 2 being genuine guests. I tried the Nottingham Car 85, which I believe is specially brewed for them to commemorate the ex Brignton Belle Pullman Car which former stood outside. Unfortunately, the name was more interesting than the beer – it was a pretty standard golden ale. As you might have guessed already, I didn’t sample the food, but it did look good, and the prices were reasonable. Thats the positive side. However, I also have to report that the place is very popular with young families whose parents cannot control their offspring. They were running everywhere ! Including round the bar, and attempting to play the fruit machines. Also, there was one area by the bar which had a large screen TV showing football. The problem with this was the sound was so loud it could be heard everywhere in the pub, including areas with absolutely no view of the TV. 5/10 – not bad but could easily be better Martinsh - 16 Sep 2015 22:31 |
| Made a return visit here and the selection of ales had changed. There were a couple of ales from Dancing Duck, which is a local brewery. Always good to see a local brewery being supported and good for the punter who gets something that isn't so widely available. I went for the Dark Drake, a 4.5% stout, at £3.16 for the pint. | Called in here and enjoyed a pint of Cleopatra by Derventio Brewery. It's a 5% ale, pale and remains slightly cloudy once settled. Definitely has a crisp fruity taste to it, and slipped down very nicely. Set me back £3.21 for the pint. The bar was equipped with 6 hand pumps (2 banks of 3), other pumps featured Old Rosie, Doom Bar and a pale ale. 1 pump was unavailable. Plenty of space for a seat even at lunchtime. | Excellent Sunday Roast. My eldest child enjoyed her large chicken burger too. Good value for money. At the time of writing it is buy one get one free on the sunday roast. For my wife, 2 children and I the bill came to less than �20 with drinks! Friendly staff too. bwanajg - 24 Jan 2010 23:44 |
| Did not have any food but had a nice pint of pedigree. A large pub looks to have been decorated recently to a good standard. It looked very popular with diners and there was a good mixture from the young to the older generation went in on a Friday and Saturday nights and on both nights buisness was booming westminster - 26 Oct 2009 21:45 |
