Great pub that was busy - but we got a friendly welcome and some decent Moorhouse's ale.

Next to the train station.Has a decent choice of national & regional ales (up to 6 usually). However, the beers are served too cold...... and no end of complaining seems to have unbucked the trend.
Order your pint an hour before you want to drink.
They don't accept telephone orders in advance of a visit, I did try!!!!

I went in here with my wife the other week and was served a pint of Moorhouses Blonde Witch that both looked and tasted like it came from the bottom of the barrel. When I tried to change it the chap behind the bar told me it was like that because of the cask cooler. We won't be back.

Another good recent visit, a couple of Salamander's tried and were ok. Friends in attendence had problems with an awful tasting cider (washing up liquid) - on sending back the barman did highlight that it was supposed to taste as such!!!
Still far from convinced about the new decor. The back room by the pool table must have the biggest lcd tv known to man (in comparasion to size of room).

Impressive choice of unusual ales. Good for an early evening game of pool. Not so good when we tried to return on Saturday night but couldn't even get to the bar. The introduction of sofas has reduced the number of seats. The tables near the pool table are cramped making it difficult to access those seats as well.

Recent decor change - ? for the better.Still an excellant choice of real ales and real cider.
On recent visit the beers where in good nick.

Fantastic recent beer festival - over 70 real ale, numerous bottles and ciders. Only downside, no food only little snack things while the festival was on!Not helpful after a day's drinking and your heart set on a 3 course meal!!

The house beer is from Marble. Three other ales available plus real cider. Food seemed expensive and what I saw did not impress me. Interesting mix of people varying from those that had dressed up to visit right through to the locals effing and blinding in the corner. The best way to get here from the town centre is to walk down Chapel Street opposite Lloyds TSB, veer right when you reach the park and keep going to where the railway crosses the river. The pub is just under the bridge.

Had a nice walk through a park to get to this well hidden pub. It has just been renovated and you can tell this from the interior. Appeared to have a good selection of cask beers but when ordering they kept on going off. This was repeated three times. There didn't appear to be a great deal of people ordering ale either. Will put it down to teething problems. Food menu looked good but unfortunately just missed the lunch cut off of 14:30. Large beer garden and conservatory. Will come again if in the area.

An absolute gem!

Fantastic beers, friendly and helpful bar staff, superb interior with lots of separate rooms.

Proudly old-fashioned, but spotlessly clean and efficiently run - just like a traditional town centre pub should be.

What a fantastic pub:-surely a national treasure. Everything you would expect from a Victorian pub:-mosaic floors, snugs, beautiful ceramic tiled bar and walls, fireplaces, leaded glasswork, the works. Robinsons old Stockport was one of the lower gravity beers but went down easily and had plenty of flavour. The barman was very friendly and would wax lyrical about the history of the pub (and Preston ) to anyone who asked. Terrific pub. They just don't make them like this any more.

we intended just a quick pint here en route to another pub. Well, it was so good that we stayed on and forgot about the other place (By all accounts, we made a good choice). Great pub. fantastic interior, the staff were absolutely brilliant, really friendly and helpful, and a well-timed moment of sarcasm. The beer was absolutely first class, especially the Dizzy Blonde. A real pub.

The fact that the six ales had all changed on Saturday evening to those that were on Friday speaks volumes. Gets very busy, particularly when there is live music on.

Wow,great choice of well kept beer up to 6 on the bar but cellar runs as well. Cheap n tasty home cooked food at lunchtime. Check opening times, shuts at 1430-1500 I think most days before reopening in the evening.
Excellant jukebox and cheap pool table.
Reminds me of the Wyre Lounge Bar in Fleetwood before it's sad decline!

Essential visit if in Preston

what a fantastic pub! I had an absolute ball! So many different guest ales to choose from and a huge selection of wines and ciders. I was very impressed with everything about this place. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable and recommended two very good ales to me. I will definately make this pub my new regular, the staff are so helpful and the atmosphere is welcoming, its nice and bright and cheery. I would reccomend a visit to anyone who loves real ale as its a diamond in the rough. I am reallly looking forward to their beer festival in october, it should be a fantastic weekend with smoking monkey playing and it being halloween aswell. It can't come soon enough for me!

Hit and miss pub - sometimes you get a decent beer then next visit it is the pits. Tend to have a job lot of beers from the same brwer as their guest beers. Recent couple of visits, first had 4 Chatham beers on - all undrinkable - complaints to the bar go nowhere (reponses like drink somewhere else then etc). Next visit a week later had 4 Anglo Dutch beers on that were all fantastic.
Usually a good band on Saturday nights
