The Northumberland Arms is now called the Purple Bear. It bills itself as a smokehouse. I decided to try some of the food, which was disappointing. It did have a couple of real ales, though - Greene King Paws For Thought & Great North Eastern Rivet Catcher. I was also pleased to find Weston's Rosie's Pig. Being a cellar bar, there's little light. But, the interior is done out quite nicely. Not a bad pub. But, I wouldn't return for the food.

Not much to see from street level. An underground pub below the Eldon Square shopping centre on Northumberland street in Newcastle. Has two or three real ales on. Food looks good too.

Popped in here while the wife was in Primark across the road, I have to agree with "anonymous 18 Apr 2006" in that it's like a bunker, was fairly busy, a few people having lunch, which looked ok. I didn't have a beer as I was driving(I went in to suss it out for a place to have lunch) and I left after a swift fresh orange, but it doesn't have a good atmosphere! We went down to the Quayside for lunch!

A strange bar that to be honest people only know about because its handy to pop in for a slash when out shopping in town. Only ever seems full of OAP's having their lunchs. Had a quick pint in their once and felt like I had aged 10 years. God knows how this place has stayed open for so long.

Terrible place. The beer's kept badly, when there's anything on worth drinking. It has all the atmosphere of a nuclear bunker.
