Popped in here one lunchtime for a quick beer & a bite before going to the theatre opposite. Fairly typical Wetherspoons, it was busy but we were served quickly and the food came quickly too. Some interesting local beers, nice friendly staff as well, couldn't fault it at all.

Garbage even by Wetherspoon standards (as in they can't even get the lager/craft ale kegs right). Popular with people who wear HI-VI coats and jackets.

Long and thinnish bar which was packed when I visited. Yes, there were some very large and noisy people seated near to me whose company I did not want so I got my beers and moved away - several times actually as the place was so busy I had to find a spot without the local oiks being present! That said, the beer range was fine (Teignworthy/Exmoor and others) and it was in good nick. Usual Wetherspoons offerings but quick service this time - they did seem to have enough staff! Sadly I think it is a section of the clientele who let the place down!

This is a perfectly acceptable Wetherspoons in a town which is seemingly devoid of any other decent pubs. just make sure you don't sit on the table in the corner opposite the bar which seems to be commandeered by Barnstaple's pikeys who insist upon a liberal use of expletives at a volume which ensures that they can't not be heard.

Busy on a Saturday evening. But I managed to get served quite quickly. The Exmoor Fox was O.K. and the food was as expected from a Weatherspoons. Agree about the poor layout. We managed to squeeze in to a table in the corner, but had to ask the people at the next table to move so we could get to the seats. The table had not been cleaned recently. They appeared to have enough staff on duty.
Generally O.K. but think you could do better in Barnstaple.

Dreadful wetherspoons.
Always busy and can be hard to get a seat and not enough cosy seating (the other wetherspoons in town is much better!)
Suprisingly getting served was not to bad although the food when came out was pretty awful. 4/10 from me

average spoons busy but soon got served

Awful simply awful place.
Horrible layout with no decent seats, very busy (even for a spoons)
The other newer spoons in town is far better.

Dropped in while Mrs Campion was off shopping. Counted 9 (NINE) staff behind the bar at one point, only two of whom were serving - and very gormlessly at that. Gave up and left after waiting for five minutes (yes, I timed it).
|
Interesting drinks, very cheap but has all the usual problems of the weatherspoons chain.
|
Hmm, usual uninspiring "WeatherHanger" with very little charm at all. Uninspired range of ales on evening I visited and empty plates of food just left on tables all over the place. Toilet check records indicating the bogs had not been checked for the past 12 hours fully backed up by the bad smells.
Reasonable pint of Cottage and the Abbot was just alright, what one has to go through to get rid of their 50p off a pint CAMRA JDW vouchers. {sigh}

Sitting in the Panniers using their wireless and drinking a couple of excellent pints from Cottage, an excellent JDW. Good beer, friendly staff who know about real ale. Top scores.

Well well.. a Wetherspoons that is a wetherspoons... Ale all very bog standard...nice selection though so i wont fault them.. Went on a Friday night early evening and have to say the service was quick.. Got a seat outside in the garden to be approached by "Ting Tong" selling knocked off smokes.. Call me old fashioned but i dont fancy the idea of buying knock off in a chain pub..The Toilets to be fair were fantastic... smelled just like a toilet that hasn't been cleaned for a fortnight should smell like , horrible !!
Clean the throne room and this gets a decent mark.. as it is, gagging whilst watering the horse looses marks big style

I believe the JDW product is all round good value...but The Panniers is not one of their top pubs. Bar too small for the size of the pub...which ineveitably means a long wait to be served. Good beers though, in good condition and served to the very top. Strange, how on the coldest weekend for many years the girls were wearing 'minimalist' clothing

Late review from September visit. Brilliant place and enjoyed our guest ales from Bays and Summerskills breweries.
|
A much better than average 'spoons. Country life brewery beers dominate the handpumps.

Cannot complain about this one, indeed why do we think about logging a complaint about JDW as the starting point in a review? Lets be fair. This pub was top rate on my visit. Friendly and competent staff, well trained and alert. VERY good guest ales in prime condition and of course the price is SO much cheaper than any ordinary pub. So if its pleasant and clean and gives you what you want why knock it? Remember the days 5 years or so ago when guest ales were hard to find. We don't want to go backwards, do we?

As a Barnstaple boy who has moved away and occasionally comes back, I have to say that this one rates fairly highly on the Wetherspoons-standards scale. You don't have to wipe your feet on the way out, and the inevitable gaggle of start-from-9-am all day drinkers in the front window are friendlier than in most other outlets.
The rear garden is an absolute gem - a suntrap when it's hot, with heaters for the cooler nights...
I think by by now that most people who set foot inside a Wetherspoons establishment will know what will ensue, and this one conforms to all of that - including cheap, acceptable (microwaved) food, lots of space for diners, unfeasibly nice toilets, and a selection of real ales which purports to be varied & interesting but is, essentially, very safe (Courage Best, Spitfire, Exmoor Gold, Etc).
Sadly the Wetherspoons principle of understaffing applies here as much as anywhere - there never seem to be enough on the bar to keep things running smoothly.
Friday & Saturday nights are best avoided purely on the basis of the door staff alone - it seems that if your face doesnt fit (or should I say your face in conjunction with your bum and boobs) - then you're not getting in.....
Ultimately JDW is a formula, and a phenomenally successful formula, that attracts people who might otherwise never come in to a pub, and Mr Martin has made an absolute fortune. I wish I'd come up with it.

As someone else has said, "you get what you pay for" Well you don't pay much, and sure as hell you don't get much.
|
A better 'spoon than the average. Decent pint of Exmoor Stag. Friendly locals and staff.
|
You get what you pay for.Cheap and cheerfull and filling.Good for a drop in when shopping. Nicein the summer as nice seating area outside.Very popular with the locals.

Always buzzing with locals. A melting pot for all. Opposite 'THE QUEENS THEATRE'in Boutport street. Fantastic selection of real ales, local & Guest. Great wine list, cocktails even latte's etc Celebrate every thing. It's nice to get change from a fiver when you buy 3 drinks. Always meal deals & themed food nights(ie:curry, chinese, steak nights). Suntraped beer garden in summer & overhead covers & heaters for thoughs chilly evenings at end of the summer. Contains a family area. non smoking areas. kids allowed up untill 7ish. Always very clean & friendly. I love the fact they with out fail always have fresh flowers at the end of the bar.really nice touch. Very clean loo's never ever run out of loo roll & if a loo gets broke or something its never out of action for more than a couple of days. Great meeting place, very central.
