Typical large Wetherspoons with typical customer base. Rather appropriately in the Pear Tree, I opted for the Pear Shaped perry from Sandford Orchards. Ales were Sharps Doom Bar, Woodfordes Norfolk Champion, Greene King George & Flagon & Abbot, Ruddles Best & Titanic Iceberg. Ciders were Westons Wyld Wood, Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon & Thatchers Cheddar Valley. Probably the best selection of drinks in Kings Heath and for the best prices.

Can't fault the quality and price of the real ale always something good behind the bar . The atmosphere is fine and I like the architecture. Food can be hit of miss though
Visited on a Monday (on holiday OK!) busy but no bother and no screaming kids. Everyone going about their business and having a relaxing beer or 3. About 5 ales on, had a 5%er which the barmaid informed me was a bit more expensive on a Monday than a Sunday....£1.85. The Pear Tree may have it`s critics but for beer quality and price it`s a tough one to beat.

Really not the best of JDW establishments. The staff seem more interested in chatting to each other or fiddling with the back bar display than actually serving customers and some of them (including the manageress!) could do with a lesson in manners / civility. The ales are sometimes of dubious quality and the availability is equally spartan. It is clean and tidy but suffers from screaming uncontrolled children running around the whole pub whithout being challenged by the staff. Unfortuneately a bus stop is right outside so the entrance is used as bus stop refuge, especially on inclement nights. Smokers have to stand in the high street which is a magnet to scroungers and beggars. Have eaten here once or twice - ok, typical JDW fare.
Did a Friday night visit to reaquaint myself with this JDW. Was surprised by the range of bottled and pump beers. Ales was of the stronger variety and really pretty damn good..... maybe my perception was a little bit clouded though after walking through a cloud of wacky baccy smoke on the way in....and why was some chav blokes sharing a toilet cubicle?....they must be shy!

My last stop on the number 50 bus route from the city centre. Typical Wetherspoons with all that entails. A couple of decent beers from Lymestone and Derventio Breweries - a couple of friendly locals chatted to me and that was about it! The bus stops outside so it's quite handy for that and I also tried the other pubs in Kings Heath High Street (see my other comments)
and I agree about the people standing in the doorway smoking. There is even a sign asking people not to. Why they do I do not know.
OK but not brilliant - Wetherspoons vary and I don't have such a down on the 'Spread Eagle' as others seem to. However I had breakfast here on Saturday morning and it was quite passable. I did not have any beer, though some were and I'm sure they weren't all night shift workers coming off shift or market porters finishing for the day. But why is it my business anyhow?
Cheap beer well kept. However you have to almost fight your way out of the front door when leaving as the doors are barred by either drunks or people smoking-Check out the photo!
Odin should try the Spread Eagle in Acocks Green if he thinks this JDW is bad. Surprised at all the bad comments about this place, OK it looks like a railway bar from the outside and it`s like one big lounge bar from the inside but it`s not a massive difference from most other JDW`s. I wouldn`t even say the punters are worse than most chain boozers...if anything it`s a bit dull atmosphere wise.
Worst Wetherspoons I've ever been in. More tramps and chavs than your usual JDW, not very clean. Beer and prices are JDWs usual standard.
To get in, you have to squeeze past the chavs, chain smoking in the doorway. Once inside the place resembles a decaying bingo hall. Beer is fine. Not as clean as Wetherspoons usually are.
Long long overdue a refub, in fact even a runaround with the vac wouldnt go amis :). toilets suprisingly filthy for a Wetherspoon. Ale selection OK, staff not the best, food reasonable and usual value for money. Definately a "basics" pub in need of a spruce up.
This has to be the most UGLY Weatherspoons pub I have ever seen. Apparently it used to be a bank. I'm all in favour of beutiful Victorian banks being turned into pubs, but this building should have been demolished at the first available opertunity.
On the plus side this is the only pub in Kings Heath that serves decent real ail. It even served Hoogarden for a bit! The drinks are cheep and good. The food is fine for the price. Its such a shame everything else about this place is so terrible.
i love this place, a job point in the corner would be perfect, nice place, although one nite i got fisted....8 out of 10, the pub ent bad either

I can't believe I am writing a positive review on this pub, but credit where it is due.
1. I was able to get to the bar without needing a torch. It is much lighter. 2. Greeted by pleasant staff immediately, even though it was a busy lunchtime. 3. Choice of 5 guest ales as well as usual suspects. 4. Beer was in good nick. 5. Food was good too.
Well done, keep it up.

Of all the Wetherspoons I have been in this has the worst bar staff who just randomly select a punter to serve like thery are playing eeny meenie, minie mo - regardless of who has been waiting longest(usually me). Very frustrating when busy. Staff more interested in chatting amongst themselves and definitely favour their regular customers over the occasional drinker like me. Of course there are always exceptions, today I was served quite promptly by a barmaid who actually remembered to say please and thank you. Pub is very dark in the central part - bring a torch if you want to read a newspaper. Oddly enougb quitest section is in the family dining area whivh is also well lighted at the back. Just don't attempt to exit by the doors there - they are alarmed! Could be a good pub, just the staff let it down.

Called in to see what was on offer, and there was the usual suspects that included 2 pulls with GK IPA. Promotion at 99p a pint means there was only 1 guest on. Wasn't counting Purity beers as they are regulars now. Tried the guest, a Highwood, and potato soup would be clearer. I left it on the bar and the lady realised I didn't want it, looked at it and smelt it and agreed it was off. Exchanged for a reasonable Purity Mad Goose when I said I didn't want the IPA offer. Looks like spoons have been taken over by Greene King.
couldn't help laughing at the comment below about 'cellar staff'! what century is this woman in?!
Called in to see what was on out of the festival beers. I had been in a couple of times to find only one beer off their list available, but at this visit there were a couple of the international beers on. Unfortunately the Cookie beer was past its best, and although they replaced it, the Yo Ho beer was nowhere near the one I had in Worcester. Poor cellar staff I reckon.
It's a big old warehouse of a pub - Decent staff crew, except for one rude gobby bar maid - maybe I just don't get her attempts at irony or humour. Usual spoons fare, food fairly standard, usual mix of red faced men and women, big family section although on occasion kids have spilled out into the pub bit. Dark and a bit soulless even for a spoons and I always end up squinting into the light when I come out although thats day drinking for you. There are two bus stops right outside so if you time it wrong you have to push through a gauntlet of school kids to get in or out
All i can say is i really like Weatherspoons but after once again having a reall bad meal in here and really bad service (maybe its just me) i will stick to the w/sppons in the city centre. The staff in here really have no clue.
After waiting 15 minutes for service today, I asked for a half of the Ventnoe Golden Bitter as I had not had it before. I had looked along the clips to see the real ale on offer before deciding on my choice. The barmaid went along the bar and I could see her pulling a beer off, and she brought a pint back. She did go back to get the half I had asked for though. I was puzzled as I had not seen the Ventnoe further up the bar, so I went and had a look to see what I had been served. It appeared to be Greene King Abbott, so I waited till she was free again and asked what she had served me. She said the Ventnoe had run out (even though the clip was facing customers) so SHE decided to serve me the Abbott!!!!!! This is not what I expect from ANY pub. I did get my money back as I did not want the cloudy Abbott.
worst? on the contrary, it is actually currently the best in the country, and they have the shield to prove it! maybe you're a tad over-sensitive to barmaid banter?

As a Regular user of Weatherspoons all over the country(and normally a fan)this is by far the worst i have been to, some of the staff (not all) are very rude and thats when you do manage to get served (15min wait on my last vist and the place was not even that busy) Cheap drinks and food as always with w/spoons, maybe a new management or customer service training is requried?
Best thing bout moving from Northfield to Kings Heath, theres more pubs and especially when that includes a 'spoons', and a nice one. Good service on my few visits, good range of beers at good prices as expected. 7/10

it is possible for ice machines to break down, it happened not so long ago in our pub and it resulted in chaos!!
Cosy pub but often a long wait for service. Beer quality not bad but it does vary. Why does it have to be so dark though.
to anonymous - i don't know which pub you've been visiting but it certainly isn't this one! staying anonymous for a reason? i doubt very much they ever ran out of ice, as most pubs have an ice machine which drops ice constantly throughout the day. ales also have to be thouroughly cleaned when they run out so it was probably just a bad one-off coincidence that some ran out at the same time. i've never known plates to be left on the table till closing, as there always seem to be at least one or two members of staff constantly cleaning and collecting glasses. overly-critical i think.
Service, product availability, and cleanliness is inconsistant. Recent problems have been No tonic water, no ice, 1 bitter out of many on display. The food however is always excellent. Curry's are excellent, sometimes the dirty plates sit on the table until closing though. Possible a change of Management required? Elizabeth of York (also Weatherspoon) is a mile away and consistantly excellent!

completely disagree with the other comments, have visited this pub fairly regularly over the last few months and have always found the drink, food and staff all to be excellent. of course there are old men and occasionally chavs but you get that at every pub. the staff seem very vigilant and troublemakers are not encouraged. they also have doormen on at weekends. large pub with a nice cosy atmosphere
Good pint of Guinness - obviously reasonably priced, steak dinner was cooked to our liking, OK pub - roomy, only complaint tables required cleaning after collection of glasses/plates, but to full credit quickly rectified by staff
