This used to be a regular haunt of mine and I still have a pint or three in here every now and then. This place seems to undergo a lot of refurbs! In its latest incarnation it is a 'Flaming Grill' pub. Can't help thinking it looks a bit tacky from the outside now and it looked better when it was a more traditional black and white. I haven't eaten in here for many a year so can't comment on what the food is like these days, but looks pleasant enough when plates are being delivered to tables. These days there doesn't seem to be a divide between bar and dining areas like there used to be, you can sit anywhere and get a meal. There are usually a couple of real ales on, Wainwright seems to have a regular presence. Considering how many refurbs it has had, it does look a bit shabby and neglected in parts, for example the toilets (gents at least) are a bit worse for wear and there is crumbling plaster near the side exit door. Pleasant enough but get the feeling it is no longer the pub it once was.

Went to the Pelican Hotel on 05.03.2001 to celebrate the 25th anniversay of some very special friends. First impression of the private function room was that it looked tired and in need of some updating, ie decoration. The staff worked extremely hard to serve the guests, both behind the bar and serving of food. The tables were not set properly with no condiments availbale until asked for. A lack of spoons became evident when the dessert was served which meant a lenghty wait. A lack of wine glasses was also a problem and slow service behind the bar due to lack of staff. Wine was to have been served on arrival but this ended up on the tables with the meal due to lack of staff and organisation. occasion. Duty manager finally appeared very late in the evening after a request for his some time before. Poor, slow service and lack of staff spoiled an otherwise special occasion.

Stopped in here for a pre-match meal and pint after a long drive from Southampton (22/08/09). Was staying in the Altrincham lodge hotel located directly behind for the evening, was up for the Wimbledon game. Saw the menu and reviews, and feared the worst, but was pleasantly surprised. Really polite and diligent staff. A decent selection behind the bar, couple of real ales and the usual suspects. Timothy Taylor was in good nick. Gambled on the two steaks for 10 and was stunning for the price, could not fault it at all. Locals seemed a bit intimidating but were very chatty and welcoming. Lots of tellys about which was ideal for the cricket. Default modern pub interior but all things considered, pretty good!

Brilliant pub! Since the refurb this place is fantastic! Great food, great atmosphere, friendly helpful staff and management. This is now my regular.

Its great in here now its no smoking. I actually go in the place more often and drink more... Thats the downside the upside is only takes me five minutes to walk to the place but strangely a lot longer to get home. Up the Red's

Nice little pub to go to with friends or family.
keep in mind that the regulars are usually students from the college up the road.
There are two areas, one for smokers and one for non smokers.
The food is excellent and there's also a quiz night on Thursdays.
However the pub is nothing unique but just as I said a nice little pub.

Initially I liked what the refurb had done. The pub now has lots of students instead of chavs.
It's very busy for footie matches.
Food is well priced & reasonable quality.
The reason I no longer go is that on a dull Monday afternoon I went in with my family (wife & 2 kids). There were all of 2 other people in the pub & yet I was made to feel we were unwelcome. This was the waitress who refused to turn the gas fire off despite it roasting & the bar manager who greeted my arrival at the bar with barely concealed dislike. Not a way to attract families spending 30 upwards a visit.

Used to be ok, but I last went in in the summer whilst at some friends and if i'd don't go in again I shan't miss it. Bar area is too small, too many people and the pumps could have done with a clean. I remember there was this old chap, probably around 55-65 who had 3/4 length white tracksuit shorts on, with a zipped top, open to his navel. He was covered in gold jewellery and should know better at his age.

Looks like another case of a pub going downhill after a refurb, window smashed about 3 months ago and still boarded up. Looks relatively nice from the outside but then so did the Sale Hotel initially (same chain) Shame but what was the point in doing so much work on the "beer garden" when it's stuck next to the busiest road in the area.Perhaps it could have been moved to the side or back of the pub

The other review is brilliant! This is one of the oldest landmarks in the area!! Sadly this is a beefeater though and suffers from it. Dingy and shabby at the corners. On the upside there's plenty of room! It's divided into 2 bits- the bar area (which is like a normal pub) and the food area (normal Beefeater-style area). Prices are average and it tolerates kids so it's not all bad. Not exactly very friendly behind the bar but then what do I expect.

When your competition is the manor house and various racecourse pubs, its not hard to be a good pub! situated on the timperley side of the border after lord timperleys victory over lord sale in 1789. the trenches of the battle ground are now a little river but huge hatred still exsists between the sale and timperley tribes! need a visa to cross the border and a few vaccinations! God im well pissed!
