Should have a much higher rating than it does - very wide selection of beers, nice pub, food looked decent.

outstanding beer collection in bottles and draft, including bottles of my favouirte lager beer lao. service was good, crowd was young and trendy but a good bunch of people none the less. whe the suns out, the beer garden gets pretty packed, but a good atmosphere is the result.
|
I was in the Sun this evening for a beer and a burger; and was in last weekend for a beer.
I can understand some of the comments below. Since they were made, the interior has been renovated and the bar moved from a central position in the middle of the pub to the rear of the pub. This has had the effect of dramatically reducing the length of the bar, improving service, and also increasing the seating quite dramatically. They've also opened a beer garden on the roof (The Helios Room) for the summer.
Good range of beers including Cutthroat Porter, Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn, Doombar, Ubu Purity and the Wandsworth's local Sambrook's Wandle.
My burger was really good - served with loads of chips and some coleslaw. The other diners looked more or less happy with their grub.
Overall, a positive experience. Good atmosphere, good beer, good food. Looks like service has improved compared with previous reviews. I would try them again.

4.20 for a pint of Red Stripe probably crystallises everything that is wrong with this pub. It looks great but its prices nail its colours to the mast.
|
Visited it on the 28 December on a pub crawl around London.
Maybe we got lucky but I found the service and the staff to be efficient and friendly, not a great selection of real ale on but it was in good condition and the lager was well kept too,
Very good food at reasonable prices.
|
Was there on Sunday and SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE. We stood at the bar for about 20 minutes and the bar staff did not make any attempt to remember who was next in line. The final straw was when the barman asked my friend what he wanted and my friend said the guy next to him was next. After serving the guy next to my friend he then took orders from other people not my friend. Terrible service has ruined what used to be a great pub.
|
The Sun has decent clientele and a nice atmosphere.... but the service is terrible....
I went for the pub quiz... which was great... very cool Brian Blessedesque host....
BUT I went to the bar (choosing a quiet moment when the answers were being read out) and one chap was desperately struggling with the till and the other girl (despite catching here eye) decided putting shot glasses on the top of wine bottles and wiping surfaces was more important that serving the only waiting customer!
I can safely say I've never waiting this long to get served at a completely empty bar....
I'd like to like the Sun... but I don't

I have to echo the last few comments. I was in there last night, a not overly-busy Thursday. It took ages and ages to get served. We weren't even two or three deep at the bar. They were just painfully slow... Lots of empty glasses around too.
Mobey - 14 Aug 2009 15:33 |
Seriously don't bother, the bar staff are rude and the toilets are filthy. The wait to be served is at least 20 minutes long. Not a pleasant experience, don't go.
|
Nice atmosphere and great garden area but the service is shockingly bad. Surly, unfriendly service and it seems to be whoever shouts the loudest gets served first, the staff have no interest in keeping tabs on people's waiting time. Didn't try the food but the wine selection was excellent, if overpriced.
|
use to go here as a kid and it still hasnt changed in 20 years ! i appreciate the saying if it aint broke etc but this is taking the piss !
the landlords should be ashamed !!
|
Awful place.I will never go there again.I waited for 20 minutes for a drink and in the end walked away. The bar staff are the slowest I have ever come across. The toilets and bar generally are dirty.I do not understand why anyone would want to go there. We went across the road to the Prince of Wales which was lovely and well worth a visit.
Don't bother - wish I read the reviews before I went.
|
Why don't they OPEN the outside bar on a Friday/Saturday night? It would ease the pressure on the inside bar. Good location and worth a visit for SUnday roast r a burger during the week. The beer range is also good.
|
As others said not bad but I fail to see the attraction of this place above others in the area.
However its always packed when I go at weekends/ fridays so iguess they must be something right. Perhaps a sign of age but I prefer pubs where its possible to enjoy your drinks without feeling hopelessly crowded and full of themselves clapham types.
|
Not a bad bar, beer prices are reasonable for this side of town. Thai food has gone and new modern pub food menu introduced, reasonably priced and very very tasty. Would definatly recomend a lunchtime or early to mid-week evening visit to try the food when the place is not as busy.
|
Always packed at weekends/fridays which I guess is a sign of a good pub but not for everyone - dont come here if you dont want to have a civilised conversation
|
I'm going to give it a great review...for Monday nights upstairs is open mic. It's a beautful room up there and it's a great way to spend Monday nights. Cheap n cheerful thai and chillin out watching the talented and/or the freaks.
anonymous - 26 Feb 2007 11:09 |
I used to go sometimes about 8 years ago when it was a bit less 'Claphamy'. I think it must have been less crowded then because when I went for a drink last summer I had an awful time - is was uncomfortably packed with boring, uninteresting, braying city types.
|
I really can't see the appeal of this pub... although it does have a reasonable sized beer garden/patio. Otherwise pretty shabby and dull.
|
Always has Foxton's Minis parked outside - says it all really.
|
Many years ago (1970s) this was a decent local boozer - arrggh! There are, however, two other options adjacent and one of them, the Rose and Crown, is pretty much a proper pub.
|
Always packed and impossible to get served. Full of beautiful people talking at the top of their voices about themselves. If I was there with a large group of girls I would have left. I can't believe there was a line of people waiting to get into the beer garden there on Sunday! Seriously if you want to sit outside that badly go to the Offie, get some takeouts and sit on the Common.
|
I was dragged in here kicking and screaming at the weekend by some people who are meant to be mates its still one of the worst pubs in clapham and I no longer socialise with the awful people who dragged me in there to give it another chance!!!
juzza - 23 May 2006 13:38 |
If you go here to catch up with your mates, don't offer to go get the drinks, coz by the time you get ordered, they'll either have dehydrated or assumed you'd gone home or been abducted and left. I've been here a few times over the past month (you'd think I'd learn) and it's plainly obvious that the bar staff don't know how to work a bar ... or just don't care. Either way, possibly the worst service I've ever encountered. This place survives on the fact that it's got a beer garden, but that's all it's got. All the bad reviews I've read here are spot on. Ordered shots here and were given the wrong drink. Since they didn't have the ingredients to make it properly, the manager refused to replace or refund. My protests only resulted in me being asked to leave. Do yourself a favour, give this place a miss ... the beer garden on the roof at the Frog down the road is a much better option.
|
This is without doubt one of the most pretenious overpriced overrated places in the area much better pubs in the old town let alone clapham.
juzza - 30 Mar 2006 15:24 |
The sun never shines in this pretentious excuse for a pub! full of people with names such as tristram,Tarquin, and Algernon, attempting to reinact the day they almost made a killing on the stock market eighteen months previously!.
The combined smell of a thousand and one perfume's mixed with the feeble excuse for authentic thai food just about sum this place up, infact the only authentic thing about this place is the view across the old town through the window, thank god somethings never change.
|
An absolute mess. Very, very Clapham, with all the dreadfulness that entails. For clueless "young profs" (trainee solicitors, accountants, the odd early stages banker, you know the type) who are blissfully unaware than in their attempts to keep themselves away from the "chavs" etc are fleeing to somewhere actually quite rank.
Bad beer and the Thai food was rancid. Avoid. If you are in Clapham, get the tube away from there or failing that trek along to the Nightengale which is great.
anonymous - 17 Jan 2006 21:56 |
Of course you go here to "get a bird" my dear chap, even when you've got one already. No one goes here who is remotely interested in beer or food, though on a quiet day upstairs the latter can be quite edible. The USP for this place is that you've got 500+ people of a summer rammed together and looking to 'commune'. So, commune, impress and inveigle your selected person here and then escort 'the chosen one' over to The Polygon where you can get her, or indeed him(if that's your tipple), a lovely cocktail and indulge in some light terpsichory a deux.
|
Interesting toilets...
anonymous - 3 Jan 2006 22:16 |
Nah!! Unless you're after a new bird.
|
Nope dont like it, I'd only go there out of desperation and in the summer. Usually there are people spilling out onto the road and usually someone gets p-d off and starts a fight...GLORIOUS! Its so crowded, loud and bar small...cant see the point really!
|
I love this pub, definately a better atmosphere in the Summer tho, can get a bit hot & crowded inside when its raining. Helps that there are a couple of fit barman serving and the eye candy amongst the clientele isn't bad either!
anonymous - 26 Oct 2005 15:45 |
The Sun is one of the few reasons that I still venture into Clapham. Nice Staropramen, the food looks good and I am reliably informed its delicious. Beer garden is great in the summer, quite busy but that just adds to the ambience. To top it off I dont think I have had a bad night there yet.
|
Overcrowded, overpriced and overrun with the clapham sloane set. Good food though.
Avoid.
|
rammed with bobsters
|
Now this a great pub in summer, and serves delicious food...highly recommended
|
Who runs it these days?
anna - 12 Sep 2004 17:01 |
I lost my wallet and it was handed in to the bar in here.. Hence I think they are very friendly, honest and marvellous. Actually, an overcrowded, overpriced pub, but I rate them a little higher because of the above..
TheGP - 23 Aug 2004 11:19 |
Always found the place pretty cool. Staff OK, the main drawback is that it gets truley rammed at the merest hint of a nice summer's eve. In this eventuality bail, and head opposite to the Rose and Crown, where you can enjoy the same mileau, but in a somewhat more convivial environment.
John - 29 Jul 2004 13:58 |
This would be a great pub, if the pub staff were not the rudest people I have ever encountered. We were a table of 7 and at least four of the table came back at separate times complaining about one particular male member of staff - coincidence - I think not. It's a shame cause it's actually a really cool pub, and could be even better.
Francesca - 12 Feb 2004 10:39 |
Ace pub the staff are fine dont know what yore all harpin on about.
Neil P - 10 Feb 2004 18:16 |
I like this pub. Its very open and the beer is good. No problem with the dtaff and the beer patio is good in the sun. A comfortable place. Bar all the previously inverted snobbery comments.
Jim - 21 Jan 2004 18:16 |
This pub has a huge mirror against one wall. Every single patron can be seen sneaking sly glances at themselves in it. Need I say more (3/10)
Joe - 16 Jan 2004 10:41 |
Well just came accross this site. Many great evenings spent here. Came across posting from july 03 asking where I was. Look forward to hearing from whoever you are. Nothing seems to have changed as far as waiting time for a beer in 10 years.
|
I couldn't agree more, this place IS Clapham. Over-rated and over-run with people who refer to where they live by its post code.
crazyfunster - 23 Dec 2003 00:24 |
Somebody wrote below "The Sun is 100% pure Clapham". I like that. It think it's true. It's like a student bar in freshers week except everyone seems to have money. Most people in this pub think Stoke Newington is north of Birmingham, live in Clapham because they think it's safe (it is but then so are most places) and get lost if they venture more than 1 mile from Clapham in any direction (unless it's on the A3 back to Mummy and Daddy's)
anonymous - 25 Nov 2003 13:18 |
Ok but not the best in Clapham (in fact nowhere near it) Live local so we get to try all of them. Thai food is not as good as the Frog, staff can be a hit and miss (but then it is the same everywhere) biggest issue is that it is "the place" to go, for no particularly discernible reason
Very Local - 11 Oct 2003 15:03 |
Gary comment below is slightly out. The Sun is 100% pure Clapham, if you hate this bar then you will hate the whole Clapham. The Sun offers quite a laid back are (open spaced patio) thats quite chilled in Summer. It can get very busy at the weekends so the staff can be slow - however thats because its a popular place. Bank Holiday Monday for instance most places were only 20% full, where as this place stayed lively throughout. Expensive beer? WTF? Not at all, better stick to your local bars in Grimsby Gary.
Lloyd-Graham - 26 Aug 2003 17:40 |
Terrible pub. Bad expensive beer. Slow inept staff. Don't bother.
Gary - 21 Aug 2003 13:17 |
Its like way spaced out - just sit there and watch the stars. You can even see moon men. Wow
Richy LLoyd-Graham - 11 Jul 2003 14:59 |
Spend some evenings there ten years ago, suprised to hear it still exitst. Is there any old customer who can tell me what happened to a guy named Anoop Kotecha?
|
Fantastic pub. Always full of young people.
R - 26 Jun 2003 17:36 |
great pub for the summer. but incredibly slow service. so much so that i've stopped going. never enough staff.
james - 28 May 2003 16:23 |
Nice pub. Absolutely infuriatingly inefficient bar staff who are far more interested in looking cool than serving drinks. Last comment from clueless french barman with ever-so-carefully messed up hair to me 'Are you sure you're next?' Aaaarrgh! Idiot!
Oliver - 14 Apr 2003 10:51 |
Really cool place, but it would be better as a BYO, as my friends gave up waiting to be served and left.
|
Enjoyable Hawaiian nights here. Recommend it.
Noel - 14 Mar 2003 14:10 |
Great pub, lively atmoshere. Play the Moz drinking game there. Thoroughly recommended.
CP - 14 Mar 2003 14:07 |
Bar staff are the worst in Clapham. Expect at least half an hour wait unless you share a flat with them
james bush - 10 Feb 2003 15:44 |
Good place ... but expect a 3 hour wait to be served at peak time times though
Claphamite - 23 Aug 2002 13:21 |
Top boozer
