Real ale lovers who appreciate the Richard Oastler will also be pleased to learn that the Brighouse Real Ale Trail now has a new member.
It is the Pear Tree Inn at nearby Norwood Green. Typically it has very well-kept standards such as Teltey's and Timothy Taylor's landlord, but also charming guests such as Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Hobgoblin and so on.
The pub has been tastefully redecorated in much lighter, airier style, and features fresh-cut flowers along with a now-delightful beer garden.
The atmosphere is intended for the genial and well-mannered, and I cannot commend the staff highly enough for doing what is needed to preserve that.

I could do with this place if they had more than the Ruddles Bitter/Abbot/Sameoldsameoldwetherspoonsstandard beers on. Half the pumps with corporate garbage, half the rest "coming soon" and the rest just odd. Very hit-and-miss. Shame.

Pretty standard for a Wetherspoons but it's worth a visit to have a look at the magnificent interior.

Beers were varied and well kept in this magnificent 'Spoons conversion. Good job we were only stopping a short time as my colleague, who plays for weddings and funerals, asked the barman if he could go upstairs and look at his organ......!*!

Called just before Xmas. Very rarely indeed do you get such good service in a Wetherspoons; maybe it was just quite. This was the best choice of beers (about seven or eight) we've seen here over the last few years of occasionally calling, we had four and they were all in excellent nick. This place is actually a very good conversion job if you take the time to sit and look. It's only that it's a Wetherspoons that you have preconceptions. Yes there are the usual rough ones in for the cheap beer, but it certainly ain't the worst. There's always the Ship of course, if Oastler is not to your taste.

Always a pleasure to visit, invariably offers a dark beer for us mild and stout drinkers. (I know, most regular drinkers are generally stout, and frequently mild after a couple or eight.)
|
Always a starting point for a crawl round Brighouse. Beer is always well kept and being a 'spoons its excellent value for money too. Food is good and the staff are friendly and helpful.

The Richard Oastler used to be the Central Methodist Church, quite a change of use! The upper area, or balcony, has hardly been touched. You can still see the organ pipes.

Great beer, amazing building and nice rear beer patio 4 those summer afternoons, a well deserved 9/10 courtousy of JDW.
|
Good choice and value for money. Total lack of atmosphere
|
decent beer, not much atmosphere

One of Wetherspoons more interesting pub conversions. Cavernous with a gallery overlooking the floor, and painted ceiling. Anyone know what it was before? Could have been a church, but equally well an old time theatre? As always, competitively priced with a good range of ales (1.39 for a guest ale).
