The newly refurbished pub was a great success with good beer, good music and reasonable food......and then the manager left and someone else took over. The last time I went in there were three people behind the bar...two girls chatting to each other and a barman on his mobile phone all blissfully unaware of the customers waiting at the bar....I gave up and left as did quite a few others.
Oddly enough its now closed....what a surprise.
Just goes to show there is not really a 'bad' pub its just the muppets that, at times, get to run them.

Refurbished, reopened and looking rather pleasant. Brighter and more Spartan than previous, usual beers. This pub is trying to find its feet being newly opened and close to Wetherspoons. I hope it does well and more reports needed

The Star is currently being refurbished. There's a worrying demolition warning sign up, and I have heard reports of great big bits of granite being shifted. So maybe is being completely stripped inside. Owned by Star Pubs now, which is part of Heineken. Spent a few good weekend hours there in the lower bar in the past, watching the rugby amongst an enthusiastic crowd; beer was always good.

Closed and boarded up. The Star has been limping along for a long time now. It is a huge pub but is in very poor condition and apart from the large screen sky sports telly there wasn't much point in going in there unless you like a pub where you shoes stick to the floor and you need a gas mask to use the loo. The brewery (Scottish & Newcastle) have promised a refurbishment but who knows if this will happen in the near future. It will take a brave punter to take it on as the business rates alone are just under £50K per year let alone the rent demanded from the brewery.
Split into flats seems like an option.

Ah ha!!! I walked past the place last night at 10 PM and it was open. One customer, head in hands nursing a pint. A large pub with huge potential more reports needed please.

Closed, Wetherspoon effect I guess

I would rate The Star as one of the better pubs in Penzance.Nothing special to look at,but the meals were much better than you might expect and it's the best place to watch the footy. Can't comment on the beer quality as I always stuck to Strongbow in here.

have been in the star for many years when in town, always found it a good place to eat and drink in the past, however, our most recent weeknight visit saw it a sadder place, from the for sale sign outside to the empty interior, still, the food that we ordered was spot on and the beers we had very drinkable, i think that wetherspoons is having its effect on the town centre as we went in later and it was rammed. hope that the star can find its way again as it looks a bit run down inside now.

This could be the best pub in town. It isn't. Quiet, apart from when discos or events are on and a little bit rough.

Didn't really take much notice of the exterior at the time I visited as it was pouring down with rain. I just ran to the closest pub with several friends. Unfortuntaely, it was here. Uninterested bar staff - some joker with floppy hair and a tie who couldn't really care less we were paying customers. The ale selection was sub-standard. We're I Cornwall I thought as I glanced through the generic line-up of Bombadier and whatever else was there I didn't fancy. Luckily a friend called me, so I spent most of my time outside on the phone. But it was one of those places crammed with fruit machines, locals and not much else. Won't bother returning.

The Star has a prime town centre location and looks quite quaint and inviting from the outside but the interior is a different beast altogether. Long and narrow, it seems to go on forever and you feel that you will eventually drop into the harbour if you venture too far. At one time it would have no doubt been the small and cosy place that it initially appears to be but the subsequent expansion merely seems to be a convenient excuse to rope in the mass crowds at weekends and hordes to watch TV football. Despite all the low ceilings, flag stoned floors and different sections, it feels very impersonal and open. The front section is fairly small with an unnecessary 3 plasma screens. Down a few steps, the main bar (and yet more screens) is much expanded but lacks the intimacy or warmth that you would expect from a building of this age. To the rear is a games area with 2 pool tables, table football and darts area. Everything seems to focus around the multiple screens, some of which are situated next to each other and, rather amusingly, having slight picture delays to their neighbouring set. Despite the buildings obvious age, much of the interior appears so fake and contrived that if you tap the walls you would probably get a plywood splinter. Geared towards a younger crowd, this isnt the place for a particularly peaceful pint and with just the 1 ale, the ubiquitous Doom Bar, not much in the way of selection. It was our intention to actually eat here (the menu looked pretty reasonable price wise) but the place just didnt feel right for a meal so we just caught the end of the footie (well, Arsenal were losing so we just had to see it out!) and moved on. A bit of a waste in what could be so much better had it not been turned into a drinking shed for the masses.

A great local. Really old building full of nooks and crannies and history. Very friendly staff and Rose rocks! Only complaint would be not much of a choice of beers although the beer they serve is good. Food great too. Superb pub quiz on Tuesdays from 9. Beer to be won on every round, good competitive atmosphere. See you there!

Loud music in the evenings but if you don't mind that this is a great pub. A really nice place for an afternoon or evening (or both). Tellies showing footie and stuff. Also, I agree with the previous point that the staff are very professional - much more so than in other places in the town.
