user reviews of the Shanakee, Ealing

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nice no-nonsense pub, though the music is pointlessly loud in the evenings, and the lines could do with a good clean.

Not many drinking the Guinness in there, which says a lot. Nonetheless a great location and a nice regular crowd in there.

one of the best run Irish bars in Ealing ( and believe me there is a lot of them!) nice pint and nice to chill outside with a pint looking onto the park

I aways avoided the Shanakee as it looks like a bit of a dive and usually has a few "hardened Regs" sitting outside, however it you can get past that you will find that the pub a bit of a gem.

As you would expect for an Irish pub the Guinness is very good and there is a good selection of whiskeys. The staff are very good and can handle a crowd, and a row of Guiness's settling on the bar is not an uncommon site.

They often have live bands on the weekend and the sport is always on.

Defenately worth popping in for a quick one or two.

Good pub for the rugby and football.
Excellent jukebox but too many choices- took me ages to decide what to spend my 50p on.

Pretty good selection of beers and whiskeys. Not good if you are into your ales but excellent if you want to get trolleyed.

Straight out of the station and a great start to my pub crawl....pints are good but served a bit sloppy. Top marks for an eneteraining hour with the locals fighting with each other in a good way. Jukebox could do with being turned down a bit

i like my fosters and you will get a good one here customers at the bar are some good charachters

Underrated Pub, Good Guinness and a Great Jukebox.
Also has good live music on sundays.

This is the best Irish Pub in West London. It's has a great local atmosphere especially when there is a match on. The Guinness in there is lovely one of the best in London and this is from a Dublin man. As for the jukebox it has a brilliant collection of old irish classics right up to modern songs. The bar staff are very friendly as well as the owner (who is Irish).

Anyway if your in Ealing make sure that you pop in for a pint!

Not for the real ale lover, but saying that, turns out a decent pint of lager. This pub is not for me as a rule, but in general it's not too bad. The one aspect I don't like are the 'regulars' who sit at the bar, making access to it difficult - they tend to make you feel quite unwelcome at times too and tend to forget that Irish pub it may be, they are in fact in England. Some of the pro IRA songs I've heard sung in here are tasteless to say the least. As a consequence, the place can sometimes have a feel that there's going to be trouble a brewing at any moment.

But I digress as this is about beer. I would not dissuade anyone from visiting and making their own mind up on this pub.

A nice pub with a good range of lagers, best bar in the area to catch a game especially on a Sunday.
Staff are friendly and facilities adequate, only negative aspect I noticed is the english landlord tries to play the Irish card a bit too much

I must return, as other than the name, not much seems to have changed since April 2003!

Swift service-pipes are clean, and good range of Ice-cold Lager/Beers and Guinness, have not yet had a 'bad' pint!

Went in here for the first time on Saturday afternoon with my Dad having got off the tube at Ealing for a swift one before grabbing a taxi home from the rank opposite. I fell instantly in love with the place and did not want to leave. Returned Sunday evening to find it a lot busier and was just as taken with the friendly atmosphere. Loved the live music too. My new favourite in these parts. Will be back soon and offen.

Maybe it was a mistake to have stopped in here back in November wearing a poppy - from some of the looks I got you'd have thought I'd just skinned a kitten!

The bar staff were friendly and quick to serve, but you get the immediate impression that it is very much a "locals" pub.

The previous comment about "rough looking punters" is charitable to say the least. One guy in particular can be regularly seen on the steps outside, mumbling incoherently and picking fights (sometimes with real people too!).
ChrisBass - 7 Apr 2009 17:19
Does what it says on the tin.

No frills Pub with good enough prices, good enough service and rough looking punters.

Don't wear your best shoes into the Gents though
Ealing_Pubspy - 6 Feb 2009 13:23
This is a no frills Irish drinking den with 3 small TVs and a plasma screen that shows Sky etc. The landlady seemed nice enough and Guinness, John Smiths, Bulmers and some standard lagers are available on draught. There are also a couple of tables facing the green on the street outside. its just a pity that the buses often block the view.

I think that there are better pubs in Ealing, but I wouldnt complain if I found myself in here again.

Oh I forgot to mentionm the downside, the ventilation is naff and it can gt very smokey in there!
EskimoJoe - 6 Jun 2007 09:40
Great little Irish pub just opposite Ealing Broadway tube station.

Good bunch of regulars, decent bar staff and a great pint of Guinness.

In the afternoon and evening (particularly in the summer months) a seat by the window is a cracking place to watch the world go by.

EskimoJoe - 4 Jun 2007 13:29
Like this pub

Great place to watch the GAA and they will always put on the rugby on Friday nights great stuff!

Jon's on Ealing common could take note...

This has to be the best pint of Guinness in London and not overpriced at 2.60. Nice and quiet place to sit and read the paper or watch the racing on tv. Although I was on the Guinness the other beers seem to be well kept. Great bar service.
Wee_Paddy - 9 Nov 2006 09:56
Decent pub to start off your night with a few warm up pints, nothing really more than that though, overall a nice place.
AndrewHayden - 13 Oct 2006 12:27
Livley pub with welcoming management & staff. Great Atmosphere & best place to watch Irish Soccer, Rugby & GAA matches Celtic matches also shown here.

Great Sunday night sessions with live music.

Great pub - although it's small, owners and regulars are friendly and you are guaranteed to meet some great people here. During the week it is very quiet, but if you wat a great night out on a Sunday - head here to hear some good Irish / country music and join in with everyone clapping along!
anonymous - 9 Apr 2006 15:57
I think that as soon as people see an Irish theme pub they assume that the Guiness is great and the brain is fooled into thinking that it tastes better than any of the other local bars, when in truth the guiness in here ain't all that!
mitsy - 2 Mar 2006 10:14
Seems friendly enough when I've been in but not exactly somewhere you'd plan to go to for a session with your mates.
illhaveastella - 30 Jan 2006 23:05
erm... owners seem to be nice people... but a bit of an old man`s pub if you ask me.
Hayley_B - 23 Jun 2005 12:44
Friendly atmosphere, staff and owners friendly, packed on St. Patrick's night, one of the few places around town to have a good pint of Guinness.
Bush - 3 Apr 2005 22:04
Not too bad, a bit too smokey tho...
Beer_Belly - 17 Feb 2005 12:42
best pub in london town - can't fail with the locals owner plus staff - recommend to anyone - fantastic beer along with a very good service
cousins - 18 Nov 2004 18:44
It's called the Shanakee, and as it's a Irish bar and irish owned I guess there is no harm in playing the odd Irish band now and again. Never been in the bar when it's not friendly.
Marella - 14 Sep 2004 14:15
it's called The Shanachie, and despite the spit and sawdust atmosphere, they do a great pint of, you guessed it, Guinness.
good if you like racing or SPL footie; not friendly, but not intimidating either. music terrible - and loud, unless you like wall-to-wall Coors, Daniel O'Donnell, U2, Chris de Burgh etc etc...zzz
jay - 25 Aug 2004 19:28
Hang on its not called Doherty's...ok, im confused!!
Mary - 22 Feb 2004 19:12
If it was a genuine Irish bar it would be in Ireland, not Ealing Broadway!!!!!
Michael - 4 Sep 2003 11:21
A genuine Irish bar right opposite the station. Well worth a vist.
