After declining to pay an entry fee to the Lloyds Number One bar, we finished the night in the William Rufus, a standard Wetherspoons just up the road. The only drawback was that we were thrown out at 1:30am, whereas the William Rufus opens later! Just as well really. Ales were Burton Bridge Burton XL Bitter, Settle Metropolitan Ruby Ale, Stonehenge Danish Dynamite, Hawkshead Bitter & Dry Stone Stout, Tring Colley's Dog, Cumberland Corby Ale & Blonde, Ruddles Best, Thwaites Wainwright, Greene King Abbot, Jennings Sneck Lifter & Thornbridge Jaipur. Cider was Old Rosie. A large enough pub that was much quieter than its counterparts up towards the station. The better of the two 'Spoons.

Had a beautiful steak and pint of Guinness for just £7.35 on the Tuesday night.
Great choice of ales.
Also had breakfast here as I was staying across the road at the Ibis.
Best pub in Carlisle.

They had some Allendale and Dent beers on a recent visit. I had the Allendale Swift and the Dent T'owd Tup, the latter a 6% beauty. This is a very good place, though surrounded by some pretty ghastly hostelries on Botchergate.

This is an excellent 'Spoons. The staff were helpful and friendly, and I was even asked if I was a member of Camra, which would have given me a discount off any pint of ale. The ales I tried were in good condition and very reasonably priced. Next time I visit Carlisle I shall be back. 8 out of 10.

A lot better than I remember on previous visits. Don't know if we were just lucky but the choice of ales was superb including a porter.

Jennings ale & Derwent Valley ale on sale - plenty of choice and in good condition - excellent bar staff - spent a few hours in here over the weekend

Best place to go in Carlisle for real ale,always a good selection on with Cumbrian breweries used. food is usual spoons stuff.

Still a good place for real ale near the station - 3 minute walk, friendly staff, it sometimes seems like a Spanish bar when the staff start singing and acting.
Far better than the nearby Griffin which can be very erratic on quality and availability. Show a Camra card and get a pint for �1.49

Good choice of real ales, but it is nothing special, nice outside area when the sun is out!

Ok I suppose. Nice choice of beers but a bit scutty and in need of a clean. (Im not really sure what scutty means either but it sounds right)

typical wetherspoons- cheap drink and food- not enough staff- bad service and bad attitude...
several good Real ales though...

Has a good selection of real ales on tap, better than most Wetherspoons. The beer is usually well kept, but I have been served one or two dodgy ones in the past, changed without complaint though.Apart from that, well it's a Wetherspoons.

Usual textbook Weatherspoons. The beer was ok, the place was scruffy and the tables needed a good wiping down. I don�t think any of them will do any harm, but there seems to be lots dodgy and weird characters in there.

Although in serious need of refurbishment, the food is okay, the ales are good and varied; and service, although not perfect is actually better than many of the 'Spoon's I use every year.

There's something I like about this place, yes its dirty, yes theres dodgy characters, yes they always run out of food/drink, bit i keep going back. Try it, have an open mind, and promise yourself you'll pop in for a quick one, 6 hours later come rolling out very merry!

this place is a Mc Hole. dirty unkempt tables (admittedly no fault of the bar staff, who are friendly but seriously shorthanded, a wetherspoons trait it seems) and i had to sppon the smokey atmosphere into my lungs. bring on the smoking ban...

My favorite pub in Carlisle, as is usual with Wetherspoons interesting selection of beer most times although "Not Available" by the Sorry brewery appears a bit too often. Very good value food - try the amazing breakfast for less than two quid.

not much you can say about Wetherspoons except it seemed a little on the dark side and it is a Lloyds so more expensive than the other one,seems very low ceilinged to me but I would not fancy Botchergate at night,close to both bus and rail stations (and the cop shop)

Fairly typical Wetherspoons outlet. I was there for the quiz night last Sunday week. Enjoyable visit and welcoming atmosphere, not usually the case for Wetherspoons - but they need to get the right clips on the beer pumps. I ordered a pint of Everards, which looked and tasted suspiciously like Deuchars IPA to me. Carlisle appears distinctly poorly off for decent pubs, so I would probably happily call in again next time in Carlisle

Nic pre club pub. Good choice of real ale. Nice to be able to hear one another as there is no music. Food nothing special but nice. Staff friendly. Good for students.

"traditional interior"?! this was a shell of a building sureley - no references to State Management architecture - just one more JDW 'outlet'.
But one day when I was in Botchergate it pissed down and I took shelter there- which was nice.

A typical JD Wetherspoons pub, traditional interior, no music, cheap drink. Right in the bar area of Carlisle. Friendly staff and great food, gets busy on weekends. Large range of traditional ales. All in all a great pub.

I lost a friend to this place, have you seen him?? Think cheap and cheerful, it�s got a good range of drinks. The local area has been totally transformed in recent years. It�s always a good place to go before a night out. Most doubles are under �3 and there�s always a special offer or two, so forget about your liver, you never liked it anyway.

Nice big pub with lovely long bar and efficient friendly service, lots of real ale choice including the slightly odd Carlisle State Bitter (worth a try though!) Fairly typical of a Wetherspoons- cheap and reliable. I love it lots!
