Proper traditional pub recently decorated to a very high standard, imposing both in and outside. Never been in before but on a busy Friday night the barman remembered our order from the first pint which was impressive. Well kept beer and overall the best pub I visited in Carlisle.

Another town centre pub, on the edge of the Lanes shopping centre and with a splendid exterior and interior. This pub has 2 separate rooms, which are both small and cosy, especially when busy as it was late on Saturday evening. The barmaid was very friendly. Ales on were Theakston Best Bitter, Robinsons Dizzy Blonde & Weetwood Cheshire Cat. I had the latter. But I'd have much preferred a darker beer. The real ale range may not be mind-blowing. But it's worth a visit to sample a very traditional interior.

Very busy on pub on match day but still didn't have to wait long to be served. Old fashioned type of layout with lots of smallish rooms. Only tried the Guinness which was very good but they also had an extensive range of hand pulled ales. Well worth a visit.

Couple of ale choices. OK but not outstanding.

It was okay - ale (Thwiats Wainwright) was about drinkable.

A wondrously gorgeous exterior in green and yellow compliments a comely interior with a real range of Carlisle folks enjoying beers from the Theakston's range. A Cumberland sausage baguette was passable and the atmosphere friendly. With well kept beer and a characterful atmosphere, this was probably the best pub we came across in Carlisle.

only one ale on, theakstons bitter, nice exterior and interior, could make more of this with a few more varied ales on

Excellent little gem. Wish we could have stayed longer. Reasonable choice of ales

Traveled down from Glasgow to watch England v. Algeria game away from negativity. The Howard Arms was just what we were looking for - friendly, relaxed, interesting pub, with a nice back garden. Ten minute walk from the train station, so no hassle getting our train back. Giving this pub a 9 rather than a 10 because a glass of the house white tasted a bit funny. I'm sure we could have said something to the friendly staff, but didn't want miss a minute of the game. Nice evening (except for the result) - highly recommended pub.

Corking little boozer just a little bit out of the way, but close enough to town. Also en route for people making the journey from the station to the football ground (or in reverse), which is how we discovered it.

They look after their beer here (Theakstons), it's very competitively priced, and has a decent jukebox. Bar staff were very lovely when we visited, although the toilets seemed a little neglected.

Very old school, slightly reminiscent of WIthnail & I - a very odd maze of tiny rooms. Well worth a visit for anyone who appreciates a traditional boozer.

One of Carlisle's better pubs, honest decent what you see is what you get! Quirky set up never changed much in 25 yrs apart from the staff rotation worth a visit!

Friendly staff, but just 3 real beers on offer. Nothing special though. Good service and worth a visit if in Carlisle

It was a pleasure to spend money in this hostelry the beers were good the service was both first class and friendly. A proper boozer's pub with a plethora of small rooms definitely not rip the guts out & pack 'em in. Well done to the licencee & staff made a good experiece great!

Visited on a Saturday afternoon, fairly busy with drinkers and lunchers. The pint of Theakstons Bitter was delicious, smooth and hoppy, also had Black Sheep on handpump. A crackin' interior with many rooms, one bar in the middle, seating is comfy, there is a juke box (not over loud) a fruit machine and, although I couldn't see it, a telly. Well worth a visit.

A few doors down from a pet shop advertising "tarantula starter kits" and boasting a beautiful tiled exterior, I instantly warmed to the place and wandered in hoping that the inside wouldn't disappoint:-which it didn't. Lots of little rooms and snugs with fireplaces and wood panelling:-some of it looking more original than others, but cosy and plenty of atmosphere. Nice clean pints of Theakstons bitter and Black Sheep, served up by very efficient bar girls.
I'm not a betting man but I would put money on this being the best little pub in Carlisle.

One of the few REAL pubs in Carlisle, 2 real ales usually Theakstons & Black Sheep, neither are great favorites of mine ( too common around here and rather bland ) but always in good condition. The tiled exterior shows the Camra mob ( thats me folks ) that Lager is not a recent sad trend, these antique tiles were covered by board until a few years ago and may now be listed. Well worth a detour from the station, also try the Kings Head a few minutes walk through the lanes.

Traditional Theakstons pub close to the city centre, sporting a fine tiled exterior. It's a one bar pub, but with a number of different drinking areas, featuring wood pannelling and a number of old photos of local interest, mainly of the now demolished Carlisle Theatre, which apparently stood virtually opposite.

Disappointingly, no real ale was available on my first visit ( 2 September ) , but a pint of keg Theakstons Mild was just about passable

On a subsequent visit ( 4 September ), no Theakstons real ale was available either. I was told that this was because recent batches had been cloudy, possibly due to yeast contamination, and had therefore been returned to the brewery. By some splendid irony, which will probably be appreciated by BITE regulars, the pub was able to offer Black Sheep Bitter (!!) which went down quite well

If Carlisle has such a thing as a "must visit" pub, this may well be it

good "local", city centre pub. good mix of human life with the odd commie thrown in. place to go if you want to meet tony brown, mayor in waiting.

A great talking peoples pub, good real ales, and a great craic like Dublin a bit.
A little to both the politicos left, and plenty of soccer afficionados and rugby types, but not a rough house. And there are real young folk there too
