Good traditional village pub in the beautiful Peak District. Four ales on, all from the local area. In good condition and served by friendly staff. Prices were reasonable, not super-cheap because of the number of tourists passing by no doubt.
Didn't try the food but it looked like good hearty fayre. Decent mix of local punters and tourists and walkers. Definitely a proper local though.
(be aware: no children under 6 allowed in the pub although there are tables and benches laid out on the front green)

Excellent pub, it was very busy when we went and the service was on the slow side, but the bar maid acknowledged us and was very efficient when our turn came. 4 real ales, good selection in good condition. The food was good, large portions, sensible prices, but again slow service, we were on holiday so it did not matter.

This is the second time recently that Ive gone into a pub after a walk in the peak District and, once its known that were only ordering drinks and not food, been met with a fairly cool welcome. On this occasion, the staff could not really have been clearer. Its a shame because its a nice pub with a choice of local beers. You might argue that its inevitable in honeypot villages like this, but it hardly encourages you to return and so is short-sighted. Whats more we waited so long for the teas that were ordered that we ended up asking for our money back.

A very nice village pub serving good food and Great beerf well worth a visit when in area.Nive area outside as good seating in a must for pub lovers

Visited this excellent village local on two occasions while on holiday in the area. 4 handpumps all local brews on both visits. Food was good and reasonably priced.

Top, top village pub that we visited whilst doing a short walk around Ravensbrook and Water-cum-jolly. We both loved it. Mixture of walkers, locals and older tourists, bar staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful to us and everyone else.

Unsurprisingly they are big on food. We stuffed ourselves with delicious, inexpensive locally-sourced mains and desserts (even the little plates are big!) But beer certainly doesn't take second place. 4 local ales on tap - Buxton Kinder Sunset, Abbeydale Absolution, Blue Monkey PG Sips and Barnsley Bitter from Oakwell. Had the first two, both faultless. Highly recommended.

wonderful multi room country pub in the pretty village of litton. Food beers (generally a changing list of local brews) and service top rate.

Really nice pub. Open fires, board games available, lots of outdoor seating and a good selection of drinks. Didn't eat but the food looked really good, lovely friendly bar staff, great location. Will return, want to try the food next time.

excelent beer, great staff, lovely pub. if only all pubs were like this.
oldhalllandlord - 13 Mar 2011 21:51
Lovely typical english country pub. Really pleasant polite staff, good choice of local ales in good condition, food was very good and reasonably priced compared to some others. A good find would certainly return.

Archetypal English village pub overlooking the pleasant green. It's stone built and pleasantly traditional within, with an entrance corridor leading to two smallish, dark wood-panelled rooms clustered around the small bar. This creates a cosy atmosphere and you may find it difficult to get a seat- but the outside is just as enjoyable.
It's pretty foody in the evenings and most tables are reserved, but again a drink can be enjoyed overlooking the green.
The beer range on my visit mostly featured Sheffield area microbreweries, with Thornbridge Jaipur, Oakwell Barnsley bitter and Abbeydale Moonshine. The Oakwell was dark and tasty, and very well kept.
The pub may be rather foody but I would still consider it a classic village pub, just try to arrive at quieter times to appreciate it in full. Would return.

This is our second visit to this classic village pub. The beers, from Abbeydale, Bradfield, Oakwell and Blue Monkey (all relatively local breweries) were in good form. Sadly we didn't have time for food, but what we saw coming out of the kitchen looked good quality and plentiful.

There is a good bus service to the village including the bus we were using, the 173 Bakewell-Castleton. Looking at the timetable, there are also buses from Sheffield, Buxton and Chesterfield.

Fell in here exhausted after a peakland trudge. Excellent food and beer. With the Three Stags Heads just down the road the locals here are spoiled!!
manstein - 16 Mar 2009 17:21
An excellent, little country pub.

Four decent ales, usually with good options on offer from Bradfield and Abbeydale breweries. Honest hearty grub and a place that attracts a broad range of nice people. Always leave with a smile on my face and wish I could stop a bit longer.

Highly recommended

stayed for a week in litton and ate a lot in the red lion what a wonderful place, just found out that Terry and Michele have left as landlord and landlady would just like to say hope everything is well with them as at the time Terry was not well but still full of spirit and making the all who drank and ate there welcome, if anyone knows where they have moved to wish them every happiness and good luck to them both from two customers who stayed for b&b in the past with a wondeful couple who will I believe will be sorely missed in Litton.

Having read about this pub on this website, we called in for Sunday Lunch and a few pints. What a fantastic pub. Good beer that was superbly kept, terrific food and friendly staff (and customers).

This is a great little pub with several small rooms with lots of character. When we arrived, we were very lucky to get the only unreserved table available. Next time we go on a Sunday, we'll book.

I was sorry to have to leave. Highly recommended.

We live a couple of villages away from Litton and the Red Lion is our favourite eating out pub. Weve never had a meal there we didnt enjoy. Theres usually some specials on as well as the standard menu and some of these can be quite interesting. As has been said, even a chip butty is a delight. Its not cheap food, but we feel you get what you pay for its quality food and enough of it to fill you.

Very small and cramped for space if youre going at a busy time, Id advise booking to reserve a table.

Beer is always good, usually a choice of at least 3 real ales. Its well kept and changes often, though you usually find one from Barnsley Brewery(?) and one from Abbeydale on. After walking there, theres nothing to beat downing a pint of real ale thats been well made and well kept.

A stroll down the main street of the picturesque little village of Litton in the derbyshire dales brings you to the village green.
The Red Lion pub sits next to the green and forms part of a short row of terraced stone houses. It gives the impression it had originally been two of the houses, now converted.
The pub's outdoor seating spreads over on to the village green, which is shaded by mature trees, and also accommodates the village stocks!

You enter the pub through a small passageway which leads into numerous rooms with low, beamed ceilings. One of which houses a small bar and open fireplace.
This is quaintness at its quaintest, but genuine all the same!.
The usual drinks were on offer, plus 4 cask ales. adnams broadside, farmers blonde [bradfield], and two others I didn't recognize.
I was served quickly and efficiently by a young gent.
A range of meals were available at something like 5 upward. Plus some snacks [chip butty, 2].
We had a butty and the chips turned out to be home made and very tasty, delivered speedily by a very nice lady from the kitchen.
Anyone will know [or should] that its the cook that makes or breaks the food's reputation, and I can imagine the quality of the other meals would also be quite good.
The adnams broadside was also spot on.
This pub, as we found, is on a circular walk taken around tideswell dale, millers dale, and cressbrook dale.
what a pleasant end to the day?
If I have one regret, its that I don't live a little closer!

What a fantastic little pub - great beer, eccentric locals & the best steak & kidney pie I've ever had! We're a difficult bunch to please - 1 real ale freak, 1 vegetarian & a coeliac, and we all came away happy - top notch!
hazelnut - 13 Jul 2008 12:53
A lunch time visit to this pub provided some excellent beer. The smoked salmon sandwich was good too. Well worth the walk up Tideswell Dale!

The New Landlady Started Early Last Year, And So Far Has Been Brilliant To Work For. The Pub Has Lost None Of Its Charm, But The Food Has Improved Thanks To A New Chef (The Steak And Kidney Pies Are A Must). Well Worth A Visit!

Love To All At The RL

Litton and the Red Lion has always been a fav with me (hence the paintings on my wall, however I am aware there have been changes since my last visit. Can anyone reassure me? Also surprised that they still do not have a web site as we would like to stay with our family and dog.
gigi - 16 Mar 2008 22:05
Haven't been in some time, but have always found it extremely friendly, with good beer and an idyllic location. An excellent choice - highly recommended.
SheffieldMickey - 13 Mar 2008 22:32
Haven't been in for ages but good to see little has changed.
Late October sunday afternoon and the pub was packed with locals and their dogs,a folk session was going on in the little back room, a few tourists were studying the piles of local guidebooks and papers and everybody appeared to be enjoying the quality beer and great atmosphere. One of the best pubs oin the district.
superowl - 17 Oct 2007 12:36
What a contrast to the sourness and bad manners on offer at the Three Stags Heads down the road! Excellent choice of well kept beer and a warm welcome. Landlady even gave a fellow walker with a leg sprain a lift back to Tideswell. Didn't eat there but they turned away plenty on a Saturday night so very popular,
Richard49 - 15 Oct 2007 07:08
very good pub and ale in beautiful country location.
recommended for every Peak District crawl...
alehouses - 2 Oct 2007 14:06
Excellent pub, would whole-heartedly recommend. As a frequent patron of this superb hostelry I know that all food is cooked fresh (no ding food), and so a wait at busy times is not unacceptable. I believe 'foleyfeatures' hour wait for food to be extremely over exaggerated. Perhaps he would have been better suited at McDonalds!

Foleyfeatyres said: "Nice pub, nice beer, shame about the landlady." Well, 2 out of 3 aint bad.
Red_Lion_Fan_Club - 7 Sep 2007 00:01
Have always found this a super pub, with great beer, a good menu, and very hospitable landlady/bar staff. Would unreservedly recommend.
JackHorner - 21 Aug 2007 13:32
Nice pub, good beer, shame about the landlady. Went in for a lunchtime pint, very nice it was too. The menu looked tempting so reserved a table for 7pm that evening. Upon arriving, we were rudely informed by the landlady that it was not her policy to reserve tables for just two persons but as we had booked she felt she had no choice but to set aside a table for us. We then had to wait an hour for our meal. Definately not recommended.
foleyfeatures - 14 Aug 2007 15:33
Decent little pub off the village green. Three rooms, two with roaring fires and well-kept ales.
londinieres - 4 Jul 2007 12:10
What a lovely village pub with a great beer range. It was busy but friendly and we were made welcome. We had our dinner at an earlier pub, but were tempted by the desert, and it was no problem for us to have desert only - superb. The ales were good too.
gillhalfpint - 26 Jun 2007 13:01
Just to reassure you that although Enterprise Inns has bought The Red Lion it is leased to and operated by an independent operator (eg me!). I have no intention of spoiling such a beautiful and historic pub and will continue to provide good beer, good food and a friendly welcome.
suzyturner - 26 Mar 2007 12:15
Just heard that the pub has been sold to Enterprise Inns. Only hope they don't ruin it.
kmr1809 - 2 Mar 2007 16:23
Visited this pub during the Christmas holidays. All the comments below are still valid - good range of beer and well kept, ample quantities of food at sensible prices, hikers and dogs welcome.
kmr1809 - 29 Dec 2006 18:44
Archetypal country pub; good beer (and sensible beer range), although struggling a little in the heat. Very friendly place, with great walks to Tideswell and around - lovely siting outside on the village green.
mtaylor40 - 29 Jul 2006 18:08
Excellent pub, four of us and dog Sky spent a week in the village over new year 2005/6. 4 hand pumps which had at least 6 different beers over the week all in excellent condition. Michele/Terry (landlord/landlady) & the locals made us most welcome. A pub as it should be. Thankyou
doolieBB - 5 Jan 2006 18:33
Fabulous pub. Characterful, with friendly atmosphere, excellent beer and sometimes outstanding food. Superb location too.
North_Col - 22 Jun 2005 16:35

Paul does appear to be a tight-fisted, gluttonous Martian, Michele. Whenever I've visited your wonderfully warm and welcoming pub, I've not wanted to leave! Your food's yummy and REASONABLY PRICED! And people should flock to Litton if only to see your smily face! Pour me a glass o wine and I'll see you on Saturday!
Katie Bluebell - 19 Nov 2004 12:04
I think Paul must have been in a different pub from the one I know well. It's as friendly as any pub I've ever been in, and much more than most.Michele and Terry are delightful hosts. Not seen any fights yet. Menu is varied and helpings big enough for two to share.
Barbara - 26 Oct 2004 16:44
I would just like to say that Paul (june) must be on another planet regarding our meals and menu. However, I will agree that there are times I want to kill my husband. On the whole we are pretty pleasant with everyone else! which is a lot more than can be said of certain other pubs in the area. So there....
Michele Vernon, Red Lion Litton - 9 Oct 2004 11:17
This is a pub with a great atmosphere, good food and some really nice beer. With Barnsley bitter and Black Sheep available, I suggest to go for a shorter walk and rather spend more time in the pub!

Camilla - 1 Sep 2004 15:55
Good well kept real ale!! Log fires and dogs welcome. Menu very limited - small portions and overpriced. Go in when I go walking in Derbyshire - everytime been in - the landlady and landlord have a big fight!! Bit offputting!! Not very welcoming!!
