user reviews of the Ministry of Ale, Burnley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Ministry of Ale always seems to be popular with away fans visiting Turf Moor. It's very convenient for Manchester Road station. The small interior is very traditional. My only criticism would be the lack of any darker beers. The ale selection was Moonstone Nelson's Ale, MIlestone Lock Prop & Barrel, Reunion Talwar & Firebrand Pale. One of Burnley's better pubs.

Great brew pub. Tasty ale from the microbrewery and various interesting guests. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere and a warm welcome. Good value prices. 10/10.

The Ministry Of Ale is the first pub you'll see if you arrive into Manchester Road station. Despite spotting it, it was always planned to be my first port of call in Burnley on Saturday. I believe it normally opens at midday. But on a matchday, it opens at 11:30, which suited us fine as our train arrived shortly before midday. This is a decent old-fashioned boozer, that I'd imagine is frequented by a loyal group of locals during the week. It has a brewery that you can view on entry. The main seating area can be cramped when there are a few in. 4 ales were on. But they were all pale ales - Prospect Silver Tally, Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted, Deeply Vale Golden Vale & Phoenix Pale Moonlight. Unfortunately the previous reviewer may have jinxed my visit as none of the house-brewed Moonstone ales were on. Still a decent pub though.

Great little pub with world class beers. The Ministry offers exceptional real ale by various guest breweries and also always has two of their own brews on tap which are brewed on site. There is also a great choice of Belgium and German beers to choose from if you're after something a little different.

The landlord is a really great guy who is always very friendly and talkative and the customers are very welcoming.

HOWEVER!!!!!!! The landlady is by far the most miserable and rude person i have ever known to work in the pub trade. She simply never smiles and has been extremely rude to myself and my wife on several occasions. She really is that bad and i honestly do not know one person who thinks she is anything other than down right miserable. It's such a pity as the pub itself is brilliant but we will never go back until she is gone. We choose to spend our hard earned pennies elswhere now which is sad as we live 2 mins walk away.

In summary: Great beer, great pub, great landlord, TERRIBLE landlady!!

Old fashioned basic pub, cracking beer first, comfort second, constantly changing two guest beers and two staple home brewed (Moonstone) beers. Great atmosphere, trouble free, just a pity they changed the name from the traditional "Nelson".

This is an excellent local Northern pub, nothing pretentious, does what it's name implies a Ministry of Ale.
On site MOONSTONE BREWERY was selling TIGERS EYE BITTER and DARK STAR MILD both of excellent standard. These were backed up by
Kelham island Cool for Cats and Bradfield Farmers Blonde. A Czech lager
and excellent cider also was on offer. For those with continental tastes over
a dozen various bottled from Europe are available.
A small TV proffered sport, but, better still classic rock music provided an
excellent background. Not open Mon-Fri lunch times.
Put this on your NOT TO BE MISSED PUB list.

Excellent no frills locals style pub close to Manchester Road station. Visited before and after the Saints game yesterday. Moonstone beers were White Sapphire and Trafalgar Stout, also had Rudgate Christmas Cracker and Sharps Atlantic IPA. The IPA was replaced by Oakham JHB. A list of 20 or so bottled foriegn beers. Nothing very exciting but they did have Rodenbach Grand Cru. Beer wasn't the best tasting, sparkled to death as the northerners do.

An oasis in Burnley's desert of rubbish pubs.
Real ale brewed on the premises.
At least three guest real ales available.
Monday nights all cask ale 1.25
One small television Sky Sports, no loud music.
Not much swearing (You could take your mother)
Occasional art displays and photographic exhibitions.
Dont tell anybody or it will be spoilt.

Home of the Moonstone Brewey. Particularly recommended is the Dark Star, which is often on special offer. A selection of guest ales from smaller breweries. The pub itself is basic, but don't let that put you off, the welcome certainly isn't. An added attraction is the regular art exhibitions - usually of a very high quality

Fantastic small Real Ale pub close to the Train Station. This pub even has its own brewery and regularly has 2 of its own beers along with 2 guest beers on. Nice and relaxing
