This is my favourite pub in Beech or is it Beck?
Love this pub. Me and my mate ... Bearded Steve, make a point of visiting this pub every year on what some might call a Pilgramage. Others might call it a train.
Every March without fail, it's on with the chunky jumper and wellies, and slap that Travel Scrabble into the rucksack.
On our last visit, the ales were on top form as usual. My two favourites being Portly Jules and Barbour Face.
This pub is also famous for being the pub where they filmed the Lake District pub scenes in the movie Withnail & I.
The barmaid was very friendly, although when I asked her if the Sea Urchin Ceviche was one of the food specials, she simply stared hard at an invisible spot on the floor, as though it somehow contained the answer to a question she had never fully resolved.
A final word about the silly childish rumours that Ivana Trump sometimes drinks in this pub. Anyone with any sense whatsoever, knows that story is total garbage, as Ivana prefers The Rose Tavern on North Brink.

It was deserted on a Friday lunchtime. Doors were open letting in icy fenland winds / tumbleweeds as people marched in and out with rubbish sacks. The blackboards proclaimed fine grub, so we persevered despite the air of dated coach-party-annexe dereliction. We only found out that just sandwiches were being served after ordering beer (my half of Wherry was fine). 25 minute wait for ciabbatas which were obviously cooked in a rush from the freezer. Greasy Tesco value bacon. Grubby mats. Bored lacklustre service. Suppose we caught it on a bad day.

Found this pub on our first night of camping nearby, never needed another as the food, beer and staff were all excellent, many thanks and keep up the good work.

After several successful years, Lucille, Barry and Ben have moved on and as the current landlady bemoaned 'are a hard act to follow'. Nevertheless, please don't be discouraged from trying the new regime. Food seems excellent as ever, albeit with a slightly reduced menu and the beer range is good for the area.

Time for an update on the Woolly. As ever, excellent for food and a friendly welcome. Lucille & Barry still in evidence on occasion but their son Ben has now taken over the running of the pub. Beer choice and quality has improved greatly over the last couple of years, usually a Tom Woods brew available plus guests rare for the area - a couple of weeks back they had Archers Best. Knocks spots off the local competition. G

The Woolpack is a treat. Although not eye-catching from the outside, its a lively good pub restaurant for most of the week, its quite possibly the best eatery in the area. Eat in the comfortable recent purpose-built restaurant, (need to book at the weekend), or in the bar/lounge where theyll usually find you a table somewhere. Outside, a roomy beer garden is there for warmer times. Theres a good choice of traditional and more inventive nicely cooked menu items, specials and famously good deserts [my tip the Lemon meringue pie], and a decently kept pint of Greenking IPA too. Other ales are usually on offer, as well as all the normal branded stuff. The Woolpack also has a melting pot of clientle (unusual for the area) due in part I'm sure to the fantastic Aussie landlady, Lucille. If you happen to let on that it's your birthday, you'll be subjected to the full Lucille treatment - a ritual of standing under hats that ought to have been owned by Lord Sutch, held above you by your nearest & dearest, while Lucille rallies the venue to make noise on your behalf followed by a rendition of happy birthday. All not as frightening as it sounds, - youll revel in the attention for a while and shell capture the whole thing on photo for her own amusement I think (and yours). The Woolpack, apart from being everyone's favorite local, is also ideal for a stopover en route perhaps to/from Midlands to Norfolk. Located just off the main A47.

The Woolpack is a fabulous pub. Everyone from Lucille and Barry the warmest hosts you are ever likely to meet, to the lovely scottish lady that ensures all our eating utensils are up to scratch, are wonderful. The pub has a freindly open atmosphere and all are made welcome wether it is your first visit or you are the most regular of locals. Special mention has to be made of (in no particular order) Jackie, Irene, Cheryl, Angie (say tractor), Jan, Marky Mark (Lovely all day breakfast if hungover), Gary and Kevin. Also there are 3 especially wonderful Woolpack chicks, Katie, Lucy and Nancy. If you require good food, good beer and a pleasant evening the woolpack has to be the place to go. It is possibily the best pub I have ever frequented, enjoy.

The pub reopened a couple of years back after a long closure. Already in Good Food Guide and GBG. Hosts Lucille and Barry Carter came out retirement following their legendary success at the Woodmans Cottage at Gorefield. Excellent food and three real ales. Always busy, the Landlady is an antipodean treat.
