Bar 28 (Merton Hotel), Herefordback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Closed this week when were were in Hereford and looks very run down.

Had a reasonable pint here - bar has a pretty much bog standard modern pub feel to it though.

Hostile & Heartless!!
Following a serious accident on Holiday in Ledbury my Father was rushed to Hereford Hospital. After travelling 3 hrs to be with him, we provisionally booked two rooms @ Merton as we were not sure whether he would be transferred to another hospital or not. Upon finding a skull fracture & subdural hematoma (brain bleed) he was airlifted to Coventry for an emergency Craniotomy, so we subsequently cancelled the rooms later that night. Whilst waiting for him to come out or surgery the Hotel called to advise we would be charged cancellation fees, to which I advised them to email us regarding this as quite frankly we had more important things on our minds. Didn't receive any email - just £50 deposited from our account to which when I called to dispute and request a refund due to the nature of the circumastances - the Mangager laughed at me and told me it wouldn't be refunded and basically to be grateful it wasn't the full £50 per room cancellation fee. I would like to add that after re-iterating the full situation, not once did he enquire as to my Father's recovery which quite frankly I find digusting! We ended up in a Premier Inn in Coventry (Cross Point Business Park) and they practically fell over themselves to accomodate 6 of us for 10 days and more importantly did not charge any cancellation fees when we ended up returning home a day earlier than planned. My Father has made a fanstatic recovery, however this situation made an already difficult and stressful time even harder and to be laughed at was frankly an insult to us all!

OVERNIGHT STAY WAS GREAT, VERY CLEAN. STAFF WERE PROFFESSIONAL AND FRIENDLY. FOOD WAS GREAT AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

The Spinning Dog Hereford Bull here was actually better than the same ale in the Victory on our visit, though the BOB in the box was very warm. The barwomen were friendly, despite being dressed rather formally. Worth a quick one on the way back to the choo choo.

Not sure about the Bar 28 in the title, but certainly a bar in the Merton Hotel. The Merton Hotel's website has an area where you can click on bar and lounge and there is no mention of this name. I don't blame them either as it is a comfortable hotel bar. Our train arrived later than we expected and we only had about 40 minutes before kick off. One of our group looked through the window and spotted the two hand pumps. This made our decision to visit, however when the rest of our group caught up they pointed out the GBG Kings Fee was just across the road. We had already ordered drinks so we stayed here. On hand pump they had Wye Valley Bitter and Hereford Pale Ale and they also had a polypin of Wickwar's Bob at 2.00 a pint. No problems with the ale quality on what I drunk. A number of leather sofas were in the lounge but not many customers in here. I don't know why as it was a comfortable friendly place to have a drink. The barmaid even offered to take a photo of our group, no doubt appearing on Facebook very soon.

Popped in for a swift couple of halves before catching the train back. The inside felt very much like a hotel bar that had experienced a quick makeover to turn it into a 'proper' drinking venue'. The dcor was very burgundy, if I recall and there was a TV at one end with something on (I forget what, blame the Barrels...). It was clean and comfy enough.
Two ales on - Wye Valley HPA and a Spinning Dog beer. True to the form of the day, the Wye Valley beer was excellent and the SD was flat and lifeless (though whether this is the fault of the pub or the beer I don't know).
If you've got a 20 minute wait for a train, you could do worse, but don't spend any Barrels-time here unnecessarily!

Went in here last night as had some time to kill before getting the train home. Pleasant bar with a slightly old fashioned feel. Had two good pints of Butty Bach, only two quid each as it was happy hour. Will probably visit again.

Hereford has a plethora of pub's with silly 1980's names (TJ's, JD's, Manhattans, The Crystal Rooms), which generally only sell Keg and Smoothpour and are usually full of dickheads in sports gear, (or in the case of Manhattans, Skater/Goth gear.) However, despite the stupid name, this is a typical edge of town bar in a quite smart, small hotel. As such, it has a bit of an identity crisis. Is it catering for the aforementioned dickheads or not? The answer appears to be, No!. With it's well thought of fish restaurant, Finny's, attached, it seems to me to be aiming for the older drinker and tourist. Worthington Cask and London Pride were on sale on my visit, both of which where in reasonable condition.
