user reviews of the George Hotel, Codford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Closed.

Pub closed and up for auction with planning permission granted to replace the beer garden with two dwellings with 'potential' to convert the pub and out buildings into further housing.

Seems unlikely to re-open as a pub.

visted here recently with my fiancee, we came for lunch and we were greated with a pleasant smile and hello from the lady behind the bar which one would presume was the land lady, we started off with a glass of house wine from the extensive menu on offer and chose our food, i started with homemade confit pork belly rillete, while my fiancee had caramelised goats cheese salad with red onion marmalade, for mains i had whole roast partridge, dauphiniose potatoes, and a heavenly game jus and fiancee had home made spiced cod fish cakes with a red pepper fondant plus two more glasses of house wine, i opted out of desert and went for a coffee, my fiancee opted for the sticky toffee banana pudding which was to die for according to her. price all together 58.25 which included two lots of wine each it was very reasonale and would definately come again look forward to going there very soon

Was recomended to visit by a friend, and it was great. Lovely glowing fire as we walked through the door, very welcoming indeed. started with drinks and complitementry parsnip crisps by the fire while we defrosted and perused the menu. We had homemade bread with our starters of salad of local woodpigeon with smoked bacon and a raspberry dressing. my friend had homemade fishcakes with a caper cream both equally delicious. Main courses we had Lamb tagine with citrus cous cous and Herb Crusted cod with caviar and chive cream. We shared a pudding of Classic poached Peach melba. The service was very pleasant and attentive and our evening cost under 55 we thought that bargain. We finished our evening with coffee and homemade chocs by the fire. We will definately return maybe for one of their theme nights.

All of the reviews of this pub are many years old. Went there for sunday lunch. Was very pleased so decided to return a couple of weeks later for an evening meal. Wish we hadn't!! Was this really the same place? Prices were so inflated was not surprised that hardly anyone dined there. And the service? And it was so cold!! Had to keep our jackets on during the meal. Brrrrr!! The woman behind the bar I believe was the landlady. She was more intent on spending her whole time on the telephone and chatting to locals at the bar than to look after paying customers. A 2 course meal for 2 - starters and dessert with a bottle of house wine 70. For that money there are a lot of places where you can dine. And on leaving she could not even be bothered to look up and say thankyou as we left. May return for a sunday lunch but as for evenings- forget it,

From the outside, this looked like a traditional pub, although it had a small raised area with three tables. However, the inside has been turned into a gastropub with formal dining area, an armchair area and some italianate stools at the bar. I would have continued onward to find a traditional country pub, but time was short so I settled. There was only one beer on, Sharps, but it was acceptable, and the light menu although not extensive was fine. My bacon and brie on home made bread with salad was very good, and the cafetiere of coffee afterwards was excellent and very good value. There were up to four locals at the bar, they seemed happy to be there, and after getting over my initial reactions to the place, so was I.

We had dinner here the other night; the pub looks a little unpreposessing from outside but inside it was warm and friendly. The landlady could have made more effort but the other staff were first class. The food was beautifully cooked looked very inviting. Everything was reasonably priced and we were pleased to have found this splendid eating house.

The George at Codford has gained a well deserved reputation for outstanding food. The chef, formerly head chef at Howards House, uses local produce and his presentation is first rate. Whilst not cheap the food is excellent value. The beer is good and the welcome friendly. The pub has recently won a string of awards and was particularly well reviewed in The Daily Telegraph. Well worth a visit.
