Good looking pub and the cask mark sign seemed promising. Very ropey pint of doom bar. Disappointing.

Bit of a mixed bag really. Seen better but seen a lot worse. Average in my opinion but would use again.

Gets busy for the open mic nights. Nice and shabby decor and fairly good beer.

We visited this pub on a Friday evening when there were plenty of students and some older patrons. It was good and noisy with some thumping music. We were a party of six seasoned tasters and one teenager.
The beer was good but not outstanding.
A good place to visit but perhaps you wouldn't stop there all night unless you were a student.

i didn't know steve and i'm not a friend of any of the patrons of this pub but i think that it's ideals are in the right place but implemented poorly they need a stronger and more structured team with simalir ideas

Don't understand the low rating and negative comments on here at all. No, the fairly flashy, modern decor and fittings and the generally young, studenty crowd will not be for everyone, but plenty of older people drink here too. I was a little suspicious, especially given the physical makeover, that this would go down the trendy bar route, but that's not the case at all.
I worked here when Steve was landlord and he was a decent bloke, but seriously, the pub was dying on its arse and you could really tell. The new owners have totally revived it, the food is now excellent and the drinks selection is good, although generally only 2, very standard ales on tap (well kept, though). The staff are also really nice, chatty and helpful. The roof garden is tip-top now as well, compared to the shitty backyard feel it used to have - very nice place to sit out when the weather decides to be pleasant.
Ok, maybe it doesn't attract the same crowd any more, but when that 'crowd' was half a dozen of Steve's mates, is that such a bad thing? Oh, and the open mic is as good as ever, and the system of getting a slot is still exactly the same; if someone was denied they were probably known for being embarrassingly rubbish or had caused trouble in the past, because they're always open to any sort of performer.
I'd say ignore the comments below and give it a go yourself, and definitely have somthing to eat!

This was a great local under Steve Greatorex. The refurbishment has turned this into much more of studenty pub. If you like that kind of thing it's fine.

Unless you are part of the clique do not go hoping to play on the open mike nights. I once witnessed a man ask for a spot, (It was 7:30pm there were only five people in the place(not counting bar staff)). He was told that the list was full.
I stayed for the evening and watched as other people slowly entered and were imediately put on the list.
Keep your cliques...it's not for me. Yet another pub without true musicians.
|
Absolutely ruined by refurbishment. It was great before, a little tatty but comfortable. Now seems to be only for youngsters.

Decent boozer Nice food, good ale and some pretty good live music from time to time too. Worth dropping in if you're passing, there are far worse boozers on Mansfield Road
|
No floaters on my last visit.
|
Under new management. Watch out for floaters in your beer.

Been here once (post Poacher) and it made me feel as though I'd gone into a "living pub experience" but it's still ok. Tuesday night was open mike night and if you like folksy music and real ale, this is the pub for you. Fantastic cider as well

Have tried to like this pub but just can't. I've never liked the beer in here, no matter which one I try.
Sorry.

Splendid pub on the famed 'Mansfield Road run' that serves 4 or 5 real ales.
Just far enough out of town to be a 'local' but still close enough for city centre drinkers to get to.
