user reviews of the Old Brown Jug, Newcastle under Lyme

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We were in there late on and caught the back end of a live band who were very good. They than had a disco until around 2am.

They called last orders and we ordered a round but within minutes they were hassling us to drink up and leave.

My friend was still on the dance floor while this was going on and came over to quickly take a swig of his drink then headed off to the toilets. He was refused access to the toilets as a bouncer had blocked the access and the same bouncer then physically picked him up and carried him out of the pub when he argued about it.

The pub has a lot of potential. It also has heavy handed bouncers who flout the drinking up laws and then pretty much force you to piss on their doorstep. This might explain why the outside of the pub smells a bit.

There are better places in Newcastle who will be relaxed enough to let you drink your beer in a reasonable time and they might even let you use the toilets. Go to one of those places and give this place a miss unless you have a colostomy bag fitted.

We were warned that this Marstons pub was not what it used to be and the warning turned out to be correct. EPA & Pedigree were the ales. Old Rosie was the cider. Staff were friendly enough. But we were the only customers in and I'd say this is much more of a late night venue, with a stage (presumably for bands or karaoke) dominating the fairly characterless bar. Disappointing pub. The worst of 7 we sampled in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

A great pub, popular with all ages. The beer on tap is excellent as is the entertainment. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area. Saturday evening is a particularly good night.

This is still the best pub in town. It has an extensive beer range, including many beers not found elsewhere in Newcastle and an excellent range of ciders in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere without being pretentious.
Popular with all ages including a large contingent of younger drinkers although the only nights to avoid if you want to have a conversation are Wednesdays and Sundays when they have live music.
Not much evidence of food other than pickled eggs (highly recomended) and bar snacks.
It has a heated outside area which has piped music.
Efficient and friendly staff. Good service even when busy.

The best ales in Newcastle-Under-Lyme in my opinion. This pub is fantastic no matter when you go there. Nice chilled out atmosphere and some good bands in the evenings that you wouldn't get in other pubs around Stoke-On-Trent.

Great beers here an eclectic age range of punters. Nice atmosphere, just a bit on the smokey side for the average non smoker.

Good pub, just dont stay all night if you love breathing.

Agree with comments about ales - good range and well kept (although many are stronger than i would like).
Excellent range of malt whiskys. Can't comment on the rest as i don't drink anything else, but all tastes seem well catered for including decent ciders.
The real star of this pub though is the tuesday night jazz club. Forget the word 'jazz'. This year Nigel has put on some of the best music you'll hear anywhere. Something not to be missed.
Forget the weekends (Fri, Sat) - now getting too popular and too much like any of the other town pubs.
Come on tuesdays!

Pleasant but a bit dull compared to nearby multi-room gems - mixed crowd, good Marstons Monk

Atmosphere is welcoming and the bar staff know their jobs well, and there are enough of them, no waiting long here!

Wonderful pub. The range of ales is good and with the guest ales there's often something new to try, the staff are friendly and the atmosphere's generally good. Well recommended.

Last time I went in it was lots of little rooms. Has now been opened out to one big room, but still retains character. no music on the night we went, but, due to being on the edge of town? Busy, but not full of dickeads. Excellent beer!
10/10
