Been visiting the Angel for food for a number of years now and have never, ever had a bad experience. It's always good value, service is swift and generally smiley and the beer is well kept too. Nothing to complain about.

Superb. Food, service, surroundings all excellent. John and Helena

Visited recently with a colleague for a planning meeting - we do this three or four times a year to enjoy food and wine whilst working. Our wine (one red and one white) was good, but the levels seemed smaller than usual. We had the small portion choice of Venison Sausage and Mash and Ham and Eggs with Chips and Salad. Apart from the chips being a bit al dente, the food was of its usual standard. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was good and plentiful. We did notice that the menu had changed - where is the lovely Penne with fresh Green Peas and Asparagus? The staff were helpful and friendly as usual and we shall be back in the summer for another session.

After reading the negative reviews we were rather reluctant to return to the place where we have had such outstanding meals prior to the huge refurbishment.
Well, we needn't have worried - it was fabulous! Despite what others have said the 'olde worlde' charm has not been removed with the builders hammer. The lovely fires are still burning, the old pictures on the red brick walls are as they were - and the comfortable chairs are in place.
Tonight (Tuesday) was packed as it was a firms night out but the service was swift and extremely friendly. The staff have time to chat, even when it's hectic. Lovely Christmas decorations, just the right amount, with crackers on each table - a nice touch.
We had the Scampi Supper, followed by Real Toffee Pudding, accompanied by two large glasses of white wine. This meal can be had just about anywhere and varies from good to downright disgusting, but The Angel takes it to a new level of taste and presentation. Superb!

What a lovely place to eat!
The service is impeccable. It is an absolute pleasure to eat here. With little notice, I asked for a 'little something extra' for my parents 49th wedding anniversary lunch - it was 'all part of the service'. What a wonderful change!
The whole experience was perfect. We were made to feel special. There was nothing left out; even when the restaurant became more full, we still felt the 'personal service' - so many restaurants forget. Totally recommended.

Have dined here recently on 2 occassions and both times been impressed with the food and the friendly service. It has been reasonly quiet earlyish in the evening.

what are the odds that you would log on to read reviews; and low and behold there is a review from a customer who was dining on the very same evening as us; on the next table. well born2bongo; i think you should rename yourselves born to be rude, both the staff member who dealt with you; and the manager were trying to be accommodating in all areas, and would have gladly; and did offer to discount your bill following your ridiculous claim of "supersize chips" but given how rude you were i think they dealt with you how you deserved, or did you forget to mention in your message you were barred for you behavior. i am a regular here and have been for 3 years or so i always found the previous managers to be rude and your sort of people; so i suggest you dine at the bear cross from now on and leave those of us who enjoy the angel and the hospitality they offer alone, you rude man. oh and p.s. i hope the managers are here in 10 years time so people like you don't return, good ridance

I too feel the need to review this pub again. following a visit on the 1st August 2008, my party of 6 were shown to our table, but waited over an hour for our main course. The food was average, and the menu is half what it used to be. Since my last post in sept 2007, I've had poor meals here but put them down to being duffs, but this really has put the nail in the coffin for the Angel. I concur with born2bongo that the Bear Cross is a better pub which serves food like the Angel used to, but you'll probably need to book in advance.

We were occasional regulars until last week. It's what we call a 'Formula Food' pub - no chef, just a student with some basic preparation skills. There aren't many places in or close to Bournemouth that do offer proper food, but we didn't mind the occasional visit.
Last week, though, we had some bad service. My husband ordered ham, egg and 'hand cut' chips, and I had chicken caesar salad. The 'chips' turned out to be a pile of very greasy wedges, and my dish was smothered in far too much dressing.
My husband left most of the potatoes, and told the manager he was only willing to pay half (of his meal - not the whole bill). He was probably being a little unreasonable but these weren't chips and there were far too many of them.
I would describe my husband as assertive but the manager said he was rude and he would happily take nothing if we did not come back.
We were amazed at such an over-reaction, but went to settle the rest of the bill anyway, only to find it was cleared. This guy wrote off over 30 for the sake of 4, and future business as well. Still I can't imagine he'll be there in a year's time.
This pub went downhill a little over a year ago when the managers moved on to run their own pub. For those who don't know it, they are down the road a mile at the Bear Cross and the food is better than ever. You often have to book though, which is why we weren't there last week!
And to be fair to Hall and Woodhouse, we stopped at the Half Moon in Shaftesbury on Saturday, and the same Chicken Caesar salad was served with just the right amount of dressing

Had a nice lunch and a nice pint, will return.

I am very impressed with this pub. nice warm glow as you enter, all tables with a 'church' candle burning. Proper English food as well as more adventurous choices. Ham Egg and Chips for 6:50 is a bargain in my eyes, and there was plenty on the plate. deserts were individually made and well presented. Service was excellent, and a good choice of beer and wine available. The carpark is large which is justified as it became very busy as the evening wore on.

A very nice country pub in the suburbs. Nice atmosphere with fires and candles. Good wholesome English food cooked properly (not out of a microwave) and friendly staff. Good range of Badger beers - the Festive Feasant was delicious. My wife said the loos were very clean

Another acceptable H & W pub I feel. It's the sort of place you would not feel ashamed to take your foreign guests to. I mean who wants dirty & torn & stained chairs to sit on to start with? Thank goodness modern pubs are cleaning themselves up.

I have visited this pub many times in the last 7 years. It used to be a lovely Olde Worlde pub with character and nick-nacks everywhere. Not any more, it is now totally a gastro pub....not a comfy chair in sight but you can sit at the bar, the rest is all dining tables so it might be an idea to find out if they still allow dogs. It is also no smoking throughout. We have lost yet another great pub.

Good pub with fine Badger ale. Attractive interior with lovely wooden beams & interesting decor. Can get very busy as this pub is a popular place to eat. Food is decent but menu is identical to several other pubs in the area - nothing original here though decent value.

After an expensive refurbishment when all the character went off in the skip it has gone a lot more foody, but nevertheless still dog friendly and comfortable but a lot less homely. A nice outside patio traps the sun, but traffic rumbles by quite audibly. The beer is well kept. However no guest beer limits you to the Badger label.
